What is the handling level of colonized cakes?
    #1501412 - 04/28/03 06:42 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

Some bum made me promise to post this for him, so here goes....

"When I initially made my first cakes, I had bought regular 250ml jars. What I found out later is that even tho they are not tapered, there *is* a lip near the opening of the jar (grrrr). So slight I had to touch the jar to figure out why my cakes weren't coming out....

Anyways, I had to scrap two cakes because all they did was crumble up when I tried to grab them and pull them out... Unfortunately I was not set up for casing at the time...

Now the last two cakes I birthed I just decided to slice them in half to get them out no problem, and I'm anxious to see what will happen... I'm assuming unless there's a contam, that this should still go through the regular stages of fruiting...

Now here's my question... My next attempt will be using cracked corn in a casing. Now once I get a fully colonized jar, what is the safest way to break up a 'cake' without causing damage to it?"

Well, that's all the bum gave me to write down... Whatever happened to good ol' fashioned begging for change?

I didnt read through the whole post, but I dont think you should worry about damaging cakes when you are crumpling them up for casing or etc.

well I had a similar question in this area so I'm gonna ask it here

is it better too hand crumble your cakes or slice with a knife...or does it really matter?

I spray the damn room, wait 10 minutes, put on gloves and a mask, empty cake into said ziplock bag, proceed to crumble with gloved hands. Then the casing is made in the semi-sterile environment.

Someone random person asked me to translate this from German to English, and this is what I came up with:

"I sterilize the air w/ lysol about 5 mins prior, get my wet verm laid down (for my casing), sterilize a my arms/hands, a medium bowl, and a spoon briefly with rubbing alcohol (iso 97%), break up the quart jar of birdseed so that it falls into the bowl, keep breaking up the larger pieces till it's a fine mix, lay it on top of the wet verm, and lay a casing layer over the top.  It's quick, effective, and I've been 100% without contamination so far (~16/16)."

Seems pretty good to me.

Edit -- It's good to see you back Fugu.
