yeh man, im taking it easy enough, but im really enjoying doing it. its pretty exciting to see how your own projects turn out! like with all noobs i guess, i didnt really know how many different ways you can go about doing things. im grasping it as i go along though. they're wbs/verm cakes, the verm is pretty fine. im going to use three cakes for spawn and three cakes PF style. a tray and a cake for each race.

so ive been reading about casings and im fairly sure i get the idea with it. what would you think if i was to mix my spawn with coir/verm and lay it in my trays like that? instead of layering the spawn on the bottom and putting the casing layer over it. i was originally going to do it the first way and case with a thin layer of verm, but after reading about casings im not too sure.
any thoughts? thanks.

When I started I bought 6 jars and made 12 and then compared them to each other. It made me confident I could make the jars right. I live in a colder place and heat my jars to keep them at 80 deg.

hello all. got an update for you.

last sunday i pasteurized some coir and verm, broke up a B+ and Space Coast cake and mixed them with my (cooled) sub. i threw them back into incubation and today they were fully colonized so i cased them and put them in my FC. heres the substrate mix. about 80:20 coir and verm.

the cake is B+ and its been in the chamber for 6 days. waiting game!

check the link in my sig PROPER SGFC
compare yours to that.
i dont think yours will get enough fresh air exchange.
PS. cubes have 6 sides, so does your fruiting chamber.

so you reckon i should drill more holes in it? its has holes on every side but not too many. my friend was telling me that higher CO2 levels in the early stages of fruiting promotes pinning. i never researched this further though! also my last SGFC had lots of holes but i never drilled them in the bottom, so i think i think the air inside it was not properly humidified. i didn't get an awful lot of pins.

drill 1/4" holes every 2 inches

he was mistaken
i never drilled them in the bottom,
drill them in the bottom
do that

is it necessary to patch the mycelium that reaches up through the casing layer?

No its not necessary. Just like casing cubes is unnecessary. Some people do it but you dont have to and you can throw it into fruit if you see the myc poking thru the casing or you can throw some more patching over the places that the myc is poking thru and let it sit another day and then put into fruit

yo, got some pin pics for you guys
this pic is of the Space Coast tray. there's a few visible pins on that crept up over the past day or two. the ones up top looks like its a cap coming up from the side of the tray as its a little bigger than the rest and kind of squashed looking! hopefully there's more underneath ready to spring.

next is a pic of the B+ tray, no pins on it yet, i think pinning may have been delayed due to the fact that the myc colonized the casing quite a bit, so hopefully soon enough i'll get some.

here's the B+ cake. 2 pins at the moment, hoping for more soon.

quick question if someone can answer. should i be keeping the humidity high to promote pinning or does stepping up the FAE make for better pinning? i put wax paper around the cake and over the trays, after a day i noticed the myc on the cake getting very fluffy, and it seemed to colonize the verm base a good bit more, and the casing on the B+ plus tray started to get colonized quicker. will this help pinning?
thanks for any help!

IME, Higher FAE = More pins Higher humidity = Larger, More solid fruits.
Try to find some middle ground, or figure out a way to keep both optimal

3 quick pic of three days in.
what's with the fat guy!?

the SC tray.

looks like the B+ has a few side pins, nothing growing on top. i've got a sheet of wax paper over the top of the tray, hopefully it might help it. is there any good method to getting it to pin on top at moment or will it only pin on the sides now?

thanks.

i have holes on all six sides. there's always been holes on all sides of this FC. is it the amount of holes on the walls the issue you have with my FC? my home is not a very humid one as our country is quite cold and never humid.

where da holes at?
and the fuzzy mycelium at the base of every fruit you have leads me to believe there is an air exchange problem, and that has to do with yuor fruiting chamber.

i got 6 on the long sides and bottom, 5 on the shorts sides and top. i might add and extra few holes on the walls for good measure. before i got to fan it you can really feel the humidity inside the box when you put your hand in it.
