A good motherboard testing utility?
    #15008894 - 08/31/11 08:16 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

A friend of mine built his own PC and used a cheap PSU.

After about 2 years the PSU failed.

He replaced his PSU with a pricier 650w DiabloTek model.

He says that at first the computer rebooted randomly once,

but was otherwise functioning normally. He has also complained

that sometimes he'll leave his computer running at night

to find it powered off in the morning.

I figured that his old PSU had possibly damaged the board

in his computer. I went ahead and downloaded some hardware

testing software for him and the tests claimed that the PC was fine.

I was just wondering if any shroomerite knew of any free

software that is really good for testing the status of his

motherboard.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

It's impossible to isolate the motherboard in a software testing routine. You can only test subsystems, such as memory (which includes testing the memory controller, but if it fails, you never know which was the problem: controller or memory) etc.

Impossible is a strong word, but in general I agree with you.  If one has enough control over the hardware and the diagnostics are written for the specific hardware, then many of the components that are integrated into the motherboard can be tested for correct functionality.  Apple service diagnostics is a good example of this, being capable of detecting many logic board failure modes.  Unfortunately, koraks is more or less correct.  The diagnostics rarely identify a failure even when the vendor has complete control over both hardware and software.
