They are excellent edibles. Make sure you cook them before the gills change color from white. The taste is hard to describe, but they go well with eggs in my opinion.
They are not normally associated with poisoning with the consumption of alcohol. But it should be noted that some people seem to become more sensitive to mushrooms when they consume alcohol, so the possibility exists (for almost any mushroom).
The hardest part with picking them to eat is getting them home and cooked before they turn color. The last time I had a big harvest I got a few people and we set up 2 teams - one for cooking and the other picking and getting them home in shifts.
When they're fruiting well you can easily pick bushels.
Good luck.

TM: i know about that. esp. when you find a large fruiting. you get caught up in picking in a large field and by the time you are done and get home it's too late for the first ones.

The spores on shaggy manes are black not white. Eat them inthe close cap before they began top melt.
here is a good image of one growing in a crack int he curb along a sidewalk at the U village mall.
Fry them in butter with lemon and garlic. They are great.

The two smaller ones in the image below are ready for slicing and cooking.

here is a pic of a small specimen in the right stage for picking. it shows gill structure [note that gills are still completely white], thin flesh, delicate hollow stipe:

MJ, if that was supposed to be to me, i'm sorry for any confusion. i was pointing out the pristine gills as seen in specimens still ripe to be eaten for zero.

He never said the spore print was white. He said cook them before THE GILLS turn from BLACK TO WHITE. Come on mj, lets reread things before we go correcting someone.
