California, mushroom infestation
    #1500555 - 04/28/03 11:52 AM (21 years, 1 month ago)

Me and my buddy, went hunting the other day in a local cow field. This place is heaven for hunting, well for us newbs anyways. We have a mushroom hand book in which we can identify each mushroom in the northern Cali region.
We stumbled upon a fallen tree, with cow patties EVERYWHERE....... around the base of the tree and on the tree, and on the ground around were thousands and thousands of mushrooms.....THE JACKPOT!!!!! They were about 4 inches tall at largest, some caps open, but mostly closed. They had thick white stems, with reddish orangish caps. they look exactly like the ones I have bought before, and ate(so i could hallucinate). They also look like all the pics of the mushrooms in the mushroom growing section of this site. When they dried the stems bruised blue, my friend identified them online, and supposedly they are a hallucinagetic mushroom. I havent eaten any yet, but my friend did and he said they worked good. Should I eat em? Im scared of mushroom poisoning.....

We gathered 3 pounds wet.

hmm. the ones you see in the growing section of this site would never grow on trees..unless there was a patty on the tree maybe..

What exactly did your friend identify them as.??

There are no magic tree shrooms growing on trees and no magic shrooms growing in manure in northern Callifornia and P. cubensis are not reddish/orange in color.

I would not eat them and if they were reddish brown and Pnaeolus subbalteatus then there would not be white stems and bluish on the stems since the P. subbs had a reddish borwn stem which hides usually any bluing.

No pictures makes for a poor description.

Only that he said they had white stems...

Murkfirst: You should really get a picture. I live in Northern CA, and have never found mushrooms of you speak of growing from manure or a tree that would be active.

Also, Psilocybe/Panaeolus do not usually grow in thick troops like that with hundreds of them in the same area. What was the the spore print ? Are you sure they bruised blue? They should have bruised blue fresh if they were Ps. cyanescens, which be the only mushroom that you have sort of described, but, that is EXTREMELY rare to be finding them this time of the year, and in those numbers.

Dont eat them.

Blue ringers originated in pastures as does P. fimetaria.

They do grow in bunches and can exceed fiftyy pounds ion a small lawn area if growing conditions and ferrtilizers are right.

Here is a small clump of clusters growing side by side on a lawn which had over ten thousand shrooms in a few small areas.

HEre is a small lawn with a curb to show the length.

See how they are all over. When I first found this lawn, one of 22 around the building, It was wall to wall and the evil Ste en King machinencame runbling down the other end of the sidewalk and began clipping my childrens heads off.''

And a close up of some of those same clusters and colonies of blue ringers.

That box below has close to five fresh pounds in it. and you can see above where I am picking them form the ground in front of my knees. I always kneel down and give hoomage to their presence to the east, to the west to the north and then to the south.

Here are some blue ringers in woodchips from Eugene, Oregon in the Bon Marche Parking lot of the Valley River Shopping Center.

Don't worry that was ten years ago and they are not there anymore because ivy was planted and ate all the nutriennts and overran the muclh beds.

Here are four close ups of clumps and clusters of P. stuntzii from the Bon Marche Parking lot. See how thichk and dense they can get.

.

and
a large cluster.

Then I will show you one from the bed box of the Freeway park in Downtown Seattle from 1976, in September, the month the park opened up, there were five and one half acres of five species of psilocybian shrooms. There were liberty caps and blue ringers in the lawns.

In the woodchips of the bedboxes in steer-co were P. cyanescens, P. baeocystis, P. stuntzii and some P. pelliculosa. IT was a gold mine of shrooms. And it lasted just under four seasons. By 1980-1981, the park ivy overgrew the bedboxes. Later the Convention center had a few boxes also.

I photographed this clump I edged out of one bed box in the park near the central bathroom area.

The box was wall to wall under the ivy.

I then turned the clump around and phtographed it from the other side. You can see were the slugs began their feast ont he caps of the shrooms.

and from the other side of the clump:

Can anyone make out the background of the buildings in thlose images above, then they can tell where I was standing when i shot the pictures.

mj

So you see Angry Shroom, they can grow in massive clusters and clumps wall to wall iof the habitat ois perfect for them.

I guess it is a mute point now because the info on this thread is 1718 days old but just in case it helps someone. There is a mushroom named Amanita Muscaria with a red orange cap with white spots and white stem that is highly dangerous and usually fatal. It is nicknamed 'The Angel of Death'. Hopefully those are not the mushrooms these guys tried. If they did they are probably never going to be heard from again.

Amanita muscaria is generally not a deadly mushroom. Never heard it nicknamed "the angel of death" either. However, amanita virosa is deadly and is nicknamed "the destroying angel."

Why would you dig up a 5 year old thread to post wrong information. Amanita Muscaria is nicknamed "Fly Agaric". Its almost harmless and makes you trip off of muscimol. Its a fairly safe mushroom when dried.

Your either thinking of the destroying angel (A. vircosa) which is all white and often puffy or the death cap (A. phalloides) which is usually whitish to brownish/greenish. They have amatoxins and are pretty deadly but I dont see anyone ever mistaking fly agaric for them.

Psilocybe baeocystis grows on dead wood and is very potent and very active it can also grow in dung :glittershitz: (grows in norcal)

also P.coprophila can grow in cow shit in norcal but isnt even worth the trouble because its so weak.. also a few toxic look alikes.

Psilocybe coprophila is not neurotropic no matter where you find them on the planet.
