Why won't they fruit?!?

Hey, I'm new to this community, and I'm already quite impressed at the collection of minds here. I was just hoping I could get some help with my friend's cultivation endeavor. You see, about two weeks ago a friend birthed three Thai Koh Samui (sp?) and three Equador BRF cakes. All three EQ cakes and one of the Thai were put in 1Gallon water jugs with approximately 2" of perlite for humidification, and another Thai in an old 1.25gallon cooking oil jug (perlite too). He left the third Thai in the jar...wanted to see how neglect would work. Anyways, all of the cakes have been painfully slow to pin...with the EQ's growing a thick wuite fuzz all over. They were all dunked/cold shocked for 24hrs. Now, two weeks from birth, the Thai in jugs are showing pins and some (less)fuzz...EQ still = white fuzz. What might my friend be doing wrong?

along with humidity, they need air exchange and light. is there holes in the terrariums for air exchange or have you been fanning? they sound like they were properly hydrated because of the white fuzz, but they may have dried out by now. did you double end case the bitches?

This is most likely a humidity/air exchange problem. If your buddy is trying to fruit cakes in a jug, he needs to make sure to fan the shit out of it a few times a day, or move up to a more elaborate set-up with automated air exchange.

Yeah, sorry. Forgot to add what'd been done as far as light/venting. Everything's been poor-man style thus far. No holes, just fanning 2-3 times a day to keep the CO2 down, and added water/dilute H202 solution as needed to keep the perlite wet. As far as light, they got indirect sunlight for the first week, and since then have been under a flourescent blacklight. Since introduction of the blacklight one of the Thai has developed about 6 pins.......and that's it.
No double-end casing, didn't want to fuck around too much on his 1st attempt, just followed PF-tek as close as possible. From what I've seen here though, it seems like cakes are a waste of one's time. Your thoughts?

you may want to use something other than a blacklight..

Blacklights have been known to produce albino shrooms.

I'd heard of that, but I Thought that the albinos came from a specific strain that PF worked with...I want to say Treasure Coast, but could be wrong...The blacklight issue seems to be pretty well debated on here, as is all lighting, however the only thing that I've seen widely agreed upon is that blue/shorter wavelength light = good. Should dim indirect sunlight be enough?

double end them things next time. it just helps keep it hydrated. they may have dried out. sometimes if it takes a long time to pin, they need a water reserve. its not too late to dunk again if theres no pins.

I haven't been able to accurately measure temp, though I know its under 85. Since birth I've been running the A/C a helluva lot more, so it's a little cooler in here now. I searched a lot, but couldn't find anything on double-end. I know I've seen a pic of it before, is it just vermiculite on top and bottom of the cake for extra moisture?
Oh, and in case I forget later: thanks for all the input!

I like to do two things with cakes when I fruit them. Double ended casing, or in the case of this cake I like to roll them in dry verm cause it sticks to the sides of the cakes better then I spray the verm till it's moist. You can still case them if you want. When they are done colonizing the casing with BRF I like and this is just me, to take them out of the container so I can get the side shrooms.

definitely never too late, if theres no pins. dunk them bitches if they seem dry, and then double end case. are they siiting directly on the perlite? because the h2o2 solution in the perlite could be slowing things down, if they are on it. damn, magash(first pic) those aren't brf cakes are they? i'd say GT on dung or popcorn cakes???nice pic

Put a cool mist on a timer to do the air exchange for ya. This worked well for me in the past before using the pod. The reason for the cool mist is it does the air exchange without lowering the humidity.
