Heh... I was just bitching about them not being up to neuro on AIM. I think that once the temps are up in the 80s they'll be back up. LizardKing is the real authority on weiliis we'll see what he has to say

You rang (in a low lurch voice)........
Not a single damn weilii yet, and I have been checking all my patches religously for the past two weeks. I was all over ATL this weekend in hot pursuit, but to no avail.
They really aren't late this year though, not yet anyways(fingers crossed for a wet year) last year I found them I believe the second week of april, but last year warmed up quickly. The year before last it wasn't until june 15 that I found the first weilii. They really aren't spring fruiters, but its not uncommon to find them in spring, usually they start to really fire up in june/july and peak in august/october.
The problem this spring was that every good rain we got was followed by cool weather with temps in the 40's. Its slowed things down a bit. Ps. weilii isn't the only mushroom about to be a late fruiter, there are several insignificant species that are also still a no show. For one, I still haven't seen a single bolete this spring yet, and I have never seen weilii before boletes.
Anyways, I expect with the consistent warm weather we've been having, and our first couple warm rains coupled with the steamy streets that follow, its only a matter of precipitation at this point. The next couple of rains or one good 2-3 day rain will bring weilii for sure.

as usual kudos to the lizard king!
yea, kinda in the same vain as what you were saying there are very few fungi of any type showing their faces here upstate sc. we have also had some monster rains for the last month or so, but like you were saying the rains have always been followed by a cold front.
man...i just miss the hunt!

-So far people have only found them in a pretty close knit area of Atlanta and its suburbs...
I do not think anyone has ever reported finding this mushroom anywhere else though i do think that the lizard king might have once found them a little further east of Atlanta than everybody else..was it near Athens?? (i dont know)
It is about a 9 hour drive north of where i live.

to expand on what the great one said....
they defiantly grow around atlanta and the suburbs. they have also been found north atlanta and as far north as athens. i think their habitat or the areas where they grow around or near georgia is still being mapped out. that is why, i continue to look around where i live in sc where it is less than an hour away north from athens and 2 hours north of atlanta.
i may not find any here in sc, but i enjoy the chances of the hunt. i don't look (hunt) to get high.....i look just to find....thats the fun part for me. kinda like a catch and release system......well.......almost
of course, lizard king is the mojo of all things weilli....

Your abesolutly right ladle, thanks for the correction. I was finding cubes the second week of april last year and weilii the first week of may. Sorry for the confusion, this stoners memory ain't quite what it should be
Those are not weilii are they? Its hard to tell in those pics. I think I know the mushrooms in your pictures, I haven't found any in my patches but I have found some in my front yard last week, not sure what they are called but haven't really tried to find out either.
I'm going to check the new species patch tommarow to see if they have come up yet, they are a smaller mushroom and it seems they might make a fluke appearance more commonly than weilii since they require less rainfall and can come up rather quickly. They also fruit a bit longer in the fall thatn weilii leading me to believe they can take colder temps and still thrive.
Anyways, everyone take care and keep checking those patches cuz it won't be long.
