Ergot sclerotia on organic rye berries 1

I went up to harvest my organic rye berries growing above the mushroom house this morning and found these. They formed on about ten percent of our whole rye crop this year for some reason.
The pictures with the yellow jacket and other unknown creature are my favorites. RR

What are you going to do with all that LSD precursor? Is that stuff technically illegal in its current form?
On another note.....how much of a problem does it pose to your rye grains?

Ouch; in regards to your crop
Are you planning on salvaging your grain harvest?... I imagine sifting through it all will be a real hassle???

I only use it for straw, so I see no reason to pick them off. The grains add a bit of supplement, but not enough that the ergot is going to hurt anything. I just thought they were interesting and cool looking, especially with insects munching them. RR

BE CAREFUL handling that stuff.
The alkaloids in that stuff can be very dangerous if they get into your body.
If memory serves me right, the amount seen in the pics is enough to poison the grain supply of a small town, if it got into their local flour mill.
Several of the alkaloids it contains are POWERFUL long acting vasoconstictors, closing up the capillaries in the extremities, and leading to gangrene.

Yes, I'm aware of the dangers. It's all in the ground now, because I shredded up the rye for straw, which knocked all the ergot off. I just thought they were cool looking. I was surprised to see it this year, considering it's been so dry. RR

Why? Is ergot transdermal like synthesized LSD? I didn't think it was.

Its active in very tiny amounts.
The main danger as far as i know would be from dust particles of it.(inhalation)
The alkaloids in it that are dangerous are active in microgram amounts, meaning that you can be poisoned by quantities that are invisible to the naked eye.
So even if it isnt trans dermal, you run a risk of contaminating yourself after having handled it.

You have to eat it to get ergotism, handling it alone isn't enough. Farmers and farm hands handle it all the time with no ill effects.
That's why it was so easy to poison a bread supply with it, because no one had any symptoms until they ate the bread.

Wow, thats a big sclerotia RR, very nice!
I haven't found them on domesticated crops yet. Wild grass only have tiny ergot.
I took a photo of a fly drinking honey dew last month, check it out: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/13180405
And you know what? I tasted the honey dew, it was pretty sweet Ergotism is caused by large doses or smaller doses over long time.

i believe the other creature to be a dog...
tough crowd
RR, that other insect is confusing! never seen that buggy
resembles some aquatic hatching insects, but you can tell that is some sort of wasp, right?
strange one
realistically how much rye would someone have to grow(if everything went well like your crop) to harvest ergot and...
edit: that bug is a hybrid. stonefly-wasp-ant-grasshopper check it out http://www.wikipedia.org/strangebugstonewashopper(dont click this)
