The Morels Are Up In Colorado
    #1496175 - 04/26/03 03:37 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

Did a little morel hunting today.

The main problem with going with a group of people is that you don't get to keep everything. Or maybe it's just that I'm not good enough at being a bastard. The group (about 30 people) as a whole probably found about 50 morels, most of them about an inch or an inch and a half tall.

These are the four I kept for myself, posed on the back of my copy of Mushrooms Demystified.

There were also some Pleurotus pulmonarius and a pretty sorry-looking Verpa conica. I got beat to the Oysters, but I'll take morels any day over them.

Definitely Happy Mushrooming!

Great!!!!

Your mushroom season has finally started!

So where where these growing? What were they growing from? What was the basic habitat for them. I've been trying to hunt for them in some orchards here in Northern CA, but, I havent found any.

I have a hunch they are growing around here too because of the recent rains we've had.

Its  the one mushroom I really want to find!

Habitat for the Yellow Morels here is fairly flat, grassy ground near bodies of water, under cottonwoods. That may not be the same as other parts of the country. The Denver area is semi-arid, meaning we get about 15.5 inches of rain a year (and that includes what you get if you melt all the snow). If you get more rain in your area then you probably have more areas where you can find them.

Nothing like the taste of a fried up morel. Those are some excellent specimens there Toxicman, keep up the good work. It requires quiet the keen eye to be able to pick those babies out admist the usual river side debris.

In the southeast I've noticed that the Yellow Morels also are found near bodies of water. Mostly ponds, swamps/bogs, and streams, not really lakes.
I found mine within about 30-40 feet of a creek. They seem to really dig growing around Poplar trees and on any burned wood. The first morel I found on my own was growing out of the ashes of an old campfire. If you'd like me to post some habitat pics, I will.

Yes they absolutely love the poplars. I found over 50 of these badboys with a pair of friends this past week. All growing on a hill covered with poplars, very close to two creeks. Nice find Toxix

Nice find!

Do you by chance want to give a guess at what elevation they were found?

Also, are the lilacs blooming in your area, someone told me this is a good indicator that morels may be flushing.
