What should I do with a SP pup

So I've had this SP cutting for over a year now. There is a 2" pup growing from the top and I can see tiny roots coming out of it. The cutting itself never rooted. What do I do with the pup? Cut it out and plant it? or just leave it alone? If I do cut it out, what would be the best way of doing that?
Thanks.

its hard to get a 2 inch cutting/pup to root but if the cutting is still alive cut the top two inches of that as well, leave it outside in the sun for 7 days or until the bottom is somewhat hard (calloused) and plant an inch deep, then water once every 2-4 weeks depending on humidity, make sure the soil mix has been completely dry for at least 3 days before watering. If you live in southern cali 7 days should be enough if northern then 10-14 p.s. pics are helpful with questions like this

I think the roots are actually coming out from the pup itself. I doubt the cutting will root...it's been over a year now.
here is a pic.

it might be difficult to get that to survive but there always a chance it will and is worth trying, i'd still cut a little of the dead cutting to help support it and plant it so that the root like piece with the black tip is covered you dont need to callous it. also if you have some small gravel around put that on top of the soil so that when you water it doesnt get washed away

So you're saying cut like an inch off the top with the pup attached and plant that portion into the soil?

yes just so it doesnt fall over not because i think the dead part will root put the dirt up to the scabbed (yellow part) of pup then pea gravel covering the scabbed part

OK, cool! Won't the cut off portion rot in the soil? How often should I water it?
Thanks.

yes it will probably rot but not for a while hopefully not before the pup grows roots once a week is the max i would water but never water if the dirt is already wet they need time to dry out

I'd cut off the pup, leave it callous for a few weeks then chuck that in a pot and water it like a normal cactus.

Actually on second thoughts, your cutting wont root until it is thirsty. Apparently the pup is thirsty, so the rest of the cutting won't be too far behind. I would guess that it's about to grow some roots of its own. Just chuck the whole lot in a pot.

i say cut just below that root coming out from it, taking just some of the old cutting
plant it in a pot with dry soil and have the pup sitting in the soil up to the dried skin in the pic
if 1 root came out there's bound to be more on the way
let it sit potted without water for a few weeks, and check for growth of roots
maybe a couple weeks later water can start being given if root has gotten bigger or more popped out

I went ahead and made the cut about half an inch below the root. Buried the disc portion with the pup attached in dry soil. Then I put some more soil to cover up the base of the pup. I'll probably just mist it with some water in a week.
Thanks all.

don't give it any water at all
only the roots want to drink the water, and you don't really have them yet
make sure you let the remaining disc portion dry up well before planting, maybe 4-5 days
