Planet Sized Diamond Discovered
    #14980810 - 08/26/11 07:34 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

By Ben Hirschler

LONDON | Thu Aug 25, 2011 2:26pm EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Astronomers have spotted an exotic planet that seems to be made of diamond racing around a tiny star in our galactic backyard.

The new planet is far denser than any other known so far and consists largely of carbon. Because it is so dense, scientists calculate the carbon must be crystalline, so a large part of this strange world will effectively be diamond.

"The evolutionary history and amazing density of the planet all suggest it is comprised of carbon -- i.e. a massive diamond orbiting a neutron star every two hours in an orbit so tight it would fit inside our own Sun," said Matthew Bailes of Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne.

Lying 4,000 light years away, or around an eighth of the way toward the center of the Milky Way from the Earth, the planet is probably the remnant of a once-massive star that has lost its outer layers to the so-called pulsar star it orbits.

Pulsars are tiny, dead neutron stars that are only around 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) in diameter and spin hundreds of times a second, emitting beams of radiation.

In the case of pulsar J1719-1438, the beams regularly sweep the Earth and have been monitored by telescopes in Australia, Britain and Hawaii, allowing astronomers to detect modulations due to the gravitational pull of its unseen companion planet.

The measurements suggest the planet, which orbits its star every two hours and 10 minutes, has slightly more mass than Jupiter but is 20 times as dense, Bailes and colleagues reported in the journal Science on Thursday.

In addition to carbon, the new planet is also likely to contain oxygen, which may be more prevalent at the surface and is probably increasingly rare toward the carbon-rich center.

Its high density suggests the lighter elements of hydrogen and helium, which are the main constituents of gas giants like Jupiter, are not present.

Just what this weird diamond world is actually like close up, however, is a mystery.

"In terms of what it would look like, I don't know I could even speculate," said Ben Stappers of the University of Manchester. "I don't imagine that a picture of a very shiny object is what we're looking at here."

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

have fun mining solid diamond.  what kind of bits do u use for that?  even with high explosives, u won't scratch it.

A HMX cutting charge won't scratch it? This I gotta see :awesome:

Never mind the fact its soaring around a neutron star at less than half a solar radius, diamond's too hard we might as well give up :yesnod:

The thing of course has become a diamond precisely because it's being mauled by a neutron star.

I once calculated that if you lob a can of coke into a neutron star its impact will generate as much energy as a small nuke going off, a compacted planet with more mass than Jupiter, that's gonna be awesome.

An accretion disk composed of a thermonuclear fuel, you just KNOW that's going to turn someones night into day.

That's not very likely. You are talking about a dynamic gravity situation that turned the planets CO2/CH4 into diamond. If you landed on the surface, you would be squashed like an empty coke can underfoot, so hard that your molecules will come undone and the carbon backbones of your protein will add to the diamond.

Due to the dynamic gravity situation, the planet will likely be extremely hot, probably glowing with heat.

If you have magic gravity, temperature, magnetism & radiation protection equipment, make sure to bring your extreme super rocket because you are going to need an insane amount of thrust to leave the gravity of the neutron star.

It's far easier to make your own diamonds here on earth.

Not that one, but I did find a planet made completely of crystal meth in my travels. It even has a DMT moon orbiting it.

I don't believe it's made of diamond. That was just an assumption they made. And as far as i know, they have not been able to get any clear images of planets outside our solar system. They find them by noticing a wobble in a stars motion and assume a large planet is doing it. They found carbon in the spectra of the star and assume it will be on the planet. Then they assumed the high gravity would produce diamonds. There is no way to know for sure what elements make up a planet unless it's hot enough to give off spectral lines. Then it would be more of a companion star than a planet.

Well, way to crash the party with your logic bullshit.
