Pan Sub. Or pan Foe?
    #1497915 - 04/27/03 02:44 PM (18 years, 5 months ago)

There is a part of my yard that used to be a flower bed that had manure in it. It now is part of the yard. Every year these mushrooms come up. At a young age they are dark reddish brown and have a darker brown ring on the bottom half of the mushroom. They have light brown gills and a black spore print. The stems are thin ans stringy. They are tan at the top and fade do a darker red/brown color at the base. You can see white mycelium at the base. There about the length of a cigarette. The cap open is 3/4inch. At a young age the cap is bell shaped with no veil. When mature the cap turns tan and opens up. The gills turn to a purple black color. The stems bruise a dark brown. Are they pan foes or pan subs?? They look like both. Are pan foes active? Thanks alot

I doubnt they are either if they have a brown ring. No Panaeolus has a have brown rings on them and neither do Coprinus or Psathyrellas. And Pan foenisecii has a chocolate brown spore print not black purple. And do not have a purple black spore color.

A picture would be better than your description becasue there are too many contradictory characteristics in it.

Actually, according to David Arora himself, subbs can form a dark marginal band as they lose moisture.

But no...they are probably not foenisecii or subbalteatus
