By the time the Starship came around Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Cassidy were gone from the band.......leave it at that.

i think that was the 3rd major Slick/Kantner collaboration Ripple("Blows against the Empire" and "Sunfighter" being the first two) i "think" the album to which you are referring is Baron Von Toll Brook(booth?) and the Chrome nun"

You got it M......Baron Von Toll Booth and the Chrome nun was the name of the album and I believe it had several guests including a few members from the GD.

The first concert I ever went to was a Jefferson Starship show at an auditorium by my house up in Central Wisconsin. Like, 100 people there maybe? Me and all my friends were 14 or so, and they bought us beers...It was very cool. My old girlfriend still has a signed Bra someplace...

The Airplane is the best 60's Sanf ransico Band Besides the dead, And Hot Tuna I like even better. Jorma's guitar playing is one of a kind. The Starship Played here in the 80's and Sucked major ass. Maybey they just quite tripping, that would explain enough for me.

i gotta say something here RE The Starship(1975 and beyond). As much as disliked what remained of the Airplane's commercialized pap, times change and so do people. Paul Kantner said in a 1975 issue of high times that he and Grace had long since stopped doing acid and had focused(more on less) on doing coke.
Also consider that the Airplane's own private record label was an unmitigated financial disaster/ monetary suck pit from day one and ate away at whatever resources they may have squirreled away for their new form of recreational drug use. The Airplane simply did not possess the GR8ful Dead's business savvy when it came to operation a profitable commercial enterprise(Grunt records)...and who amongst us older people can ever forget that wonder album "Bark" with it's...um.......unique packaging lol.
Even though the Airplane were one of my favorite bands back then i didn't even notice that the kaukonen/Cassidy-Slick/kantner tandems had squeezed Marty out like an unwanted zit.....Marty did reunite with Grace and Paul for 1975's "Red Octupus" but it was clear that the times, and the Airplane had changed.
.... Martty Balin was always the romanticist of the band, Grace and Paul were it's idealistic faction, and Jorma and Jack just wanted to jam, hence the reason for the formation of Hot tuna which in itself may have been the harbinger signialing the iminant demise of the once GR8 and musically eclectic Airplane
In closing, i'd like to say The Starship sucked bigtime imo, but i thought it might be fair to the Airplane and all the GR8 memories i have of them to consider some of the possible reasons for their choice of musical direction and to show it in perhaps a somewhat more compassionate light....

LOL! Apparently Jorma Kaukonen felt exactly the same way, he HATED playing Marty's sappy(to some) romantic ballads. In fact when the Airplane toured in support of their Fulton street album he would insist that his brother Peter(it may have been Craig Chaquico though, not positive) perform the guitar function....the only real mystery about the Airplane is how they managed to stay together as long as they did with the Kanter/Slick-Kaukonen/Cassidy- Marty Balin tri axis causing an extrme field of tensions which may have been why they were such an amazing band in the first place
