Naked Lunch
    #14977267 - 08/25/11 05:29 PM (9 years, 8 months ago)

Have any of you seen this movie? Its probably my favorite "Drug" movie but its almost never mentioned. If any of you haven't checked it out i suggest it (its on netflix for streaming!). Its based on a book written by William Burroughs over the course of a few years. was a heroin addict basically until he died, at 83. The movie isnt about heroin but there are fictional drugs that represent (and other drugs) it i believe.

Its pretty nuts and it definitely takes more than one watch if you want to start to understand it, but its definitely at least worth one watch for anyone, You will probably know wether you like it or not in the first 15-20 minutes. Probably one of the most insane mindfuck movies i have ever seen.

Its much like movies like Fear and Loathing in LV, A Clockwork Orange maybe.. Its very surreal.

What other less mentioned movies can people suggest?

Sounds fucking insane...

William Lee (Peter Weller) is an exterminator who finds that his wife Joan is stealing his insecticide for recreational purposes. When Lee is arrested by the police, he believes he is hallucinating because of bug powder exposure. He believes he is a secret agent whose controller (a giant bug) assigns him the mission of killing his wife Joan (Judy Davis), who is an agent of an organization called Interzone Incorporated. Dismissing the bug and its instructions, Lee returns home to find Joan sleeping with Hank (Nicholas Campbell), one of his writer friends. Shortly afterwards, he shoots her while performing a William Tell routine.

Having inadvertently accomplished his "mission," Lee flees to Interzone, where Interzone Incorporated is based, and spends his time writing reports on his mission, which become the titular book. While in Interzone, the typewriters Lee uses are themselves living creatures, usually giving Lee advice on his mission. Clark Nova, one of Lee's typewriters, tells him to find Dr. Benway (Roy Scheider), by seducing Joan Frost (Davis), who is a doppelgänger of his dead wife.

After finding out that Dr. Benway is the head of a narcotic harvesting operation, producing a drug called "black meat," derived from the guts of giant centipedes, Lee completes his report and flees Interzone to Annexia with Joan Frost. Stopped by the Annexian border patrol, and instructed to prove that he is a writer as he claims, he shoots Joan Frost in the head, re-enacting the murder of his wife. This proves he's a writer, since it's a recurrence of the inciting incident that started his writing, and he's allowed to enter Annexia.

William S Burroughs was fucking insane. Brilliant but insane.

If you've never heard the story about how he became a writer: He was drinking at a poker game in Mexico and bet someone that he could shoot an apple off his wife's head. He ended up shooting his wife dead and having to flee the country. Thus eventually leading him to quip "Shoot the bitch and write a book; it's what I did."

The only time I've ever seen or heard anything about that book was from the "Bart on the Road" episode of the Simpsons.

One of my favorite films. Have watched it twice in the last year, and I don't tend to rewatch movies. A straight up dose of the surreal. I like the main character's deep, monologue tone throughout the whole movie.

Can't remember when the last time I watched it. I know I saw it in highschool film class.

I remember something about a creepy typewriter:shrug:. I'll have to watch that one again.

Love the movie and the book. Not that they have very much to do with each other. The movie is like a fictionalized "behind the scenes" of the book (the Ginsberg and Kerouac substitutes even mention that he's writing a book called "Naked Lunch in the movie), while the book is completely insane (there's only a coherent plot in the first two chapters or so, before it explodes into Satan's sketch comedy). I don't see how anyone can not love this shit.

Annnd it's also maybe satire, or something, but who knows really. If it's a satire, it looks like a satire of reality.

I can't say I really liked Naked Lunch, but it sure is a bizarre and interesting movie. The movie is extremely confusing and I never understood it all, which is possibly why I don't like it so much. I can't feel for the main character if I have no fucking clue what's happenning on the screen.

Don't watch tripping on mushrooms, it's overkill.

Saw this in the theater when it was first out. I liked it. Lucy and I attended the screening. I still don't remember much. I need to watch it again. I do remember liking it.
