Thse cant be pins...can they?
    #1497549 - 04/27/03 11:27 AM (14 years, 8 months ago)

my imaginary friend told me thru ESP that his cakes which were only in the terrarium like 2 days have started forming .8cm long stalks in a few places, it looks like the mycelium is trying to spread out and colonise something thats not there, the reason i dont think they are pins is they came so fast and that they are pretty thin, a little thicker than a needle maybe...maybe about the same as a needle...

what are the chances of it being pins??!? (its on 2 cakes)

Sounds like rhizos spreading out in a very humid atmosphere. As long as there are
not dark red/black tips to the strands i would say there just rhizos ;-)
Good luck should be pins anyday now.

The myc often shoots up little spikes, or rhizomorphic growth, all over the place for a time. Then a bit later, pinning will begin. Rhizos seem more thin and spikey as you described, pins are kind of litte fat guys when they start.
Here is a thread with a pic by MAIA, showing rhizos: RHIZOS

.... From your post, I can't tell if you already know what this is supposed to look like or not, so, sorry if I'm telling you something you already know, but this is always a useful picture:

Along with this explanation:
"The growing of the mushroom from the cake starts as a tiny accumulation of mycelium, called hyphal knot, which then develops to primordium, and this further develps to pinheads. In the picture of a casing surface ... the primordia are the small white bumps scattered across the casing surface, and the pinheads can be seen bottom left and bottom middle. They already have small brown caps. "

your inside is out, and your outside is in.
