Hey guys well haven't updated in a month or so, so here it is...

About a month back I added some big old fresh subaeruginosa specimens from the wild, then I covered it with an addition 4-6 inches of pine bark. I've been watering on the dry spells and letting it get a bit of rain but not too much (covered in heavy rain)

and yesterday I lifted the lid to find heavy colonization has finally reached the top layer, its on maybe a dozen different small areas, but it looks like its spreding rapidly judging from the new growth today.

There is still about 2 months left in the season so I'm hoping to see a few pins at least, would be awesome to see it sprout this year.

Will post pics when the myc spreads over the top layer some more, with my camera you might not be able to see it yet.

:peace:

ok well I've been saying it for over a month but heres pics of it finally reaching the top layer, sorry that I don't have a better camera, some of the patches of myc are very dense and thicky colonized.
Doesn't even look like wood in some spots just thick Rhizo mycelium.

hows it looking to you guys?

everyday seems to have an inch or so of new growth so looks like it will be fully colonized within a month or so hopefully.

Looks nice and healthy.

A few questions -
Are you going to put a casing on it or leave it exposed?
What have you covered it with, or is it in a tub?

This is a recent effort. After seeing your pine bark Austrip I am considering covering some tubs to see if myc growth excellerates.

Pins in the same season as cultivation would be cool.

this is one of the dozen or so chunks in the outside box, they're all solid myc like the chunk in the middle of this picture. I need a better camera I know :p

this has been covered with an additional layer to provide some added dampness and darkness for the myc to colonize

paper bag over that shizz

Its a very large round wooden box meant for decorating gardens with ornaments and such.
The lid is a piece of thick cardboard that covers the entire box, nothing fancy.
It started on cardboard so I figured it can't hurt lol. Introducing the lid seemed to speed up growth by alot.

I am still wondering this myself, I haven't yet but if I do I will be using a thin layer of wild pine needles from the same area as the mycelium was plucked from.

whoa you have many tubs going there, do have a thread going where I can read your progress?
the funny thing was I tried a few kinds of euch and pine from different places and this turned out to be what they ate the fastest. Its only 4 bucks for a massive bag!
so this whole tub cost about 8 bucks to fill up with pine and they love it by the looks.

Have covered some of my tubs with cardboard in the hope that they'll perform in the same way.

When it comes to casing, I'm thinking along the lines of indoor growing, how the myc is covered then it fruits 10 days later etc... Might encourage fruiting outside too?

:mushroom2:Psilocybe subaeruginosa:mushroom2: is the thread that I've posted cultivation details on for the tubs and my first blush of subs.
I am a noob, but trying, which is why I've gone for many combo's of substrate.
Wanna see for myself what works best. After research etc I agree pine is best, but when I pick them in the wild in both pine and eucalypt,
the eucalypt ones appear the meatyest and most evil looking.

I just seen your subaeruginosa/woodlovers outdoor grow TEK, looks good.

cool Ill check it out, interested to see how it turned out.

I have several of my own theories on the pine/euch thing with subs, but this could be a long post if I start to get into that haha.
I was going to try euch as well, but I had such good success with this pine that I didnt really have a need to go get any euch bark.

Thanks for checking out my tek, its kind of basic, but I think it has pretty much all anyone needs to know about what we know about australian woodlovers cult. so far.

I think casing is a good idea for mycelium growth indoors or outdoors, as I'm pretty sure it helps keep humidity in the substrate layer which is kind of what the lid is doing as well I guess.

I take the lid off for a few hours every few days as well, Don't know if it helps or not but I just like to give them some fresh air and re-water if need be.

With the other woodlovers partially composted material is supposed to work best and it makes sense if you imagine the debris they would be clearing up in the wild. I'm sure the mycelial strands would find it would easier to pierce through and absorb material which is already part broken down.

thanks for the tip, thought similarly myself.

heres some fresh pics of growth

Seems to be moving quickly through the pine bark now, I'm not really bothered if it doesn't fruit this year but is it even possible that this could fruit in the next month and half based on the growth you can see here?

more pics in a week or so.

more pictures

dont know if you can see, but in pic you can see that specs of myc are everywhere, and the real thick layer is just below the surface.
Pic 3 shows it a little better

Pic 2 doesn't appear to show much, but its just the picture, you can see that there is 3-5 main clumps all around the patch.

I forgot to put the lid back on last night and it got a bit wetter then I would have liked, didn't get flooded luckily because I got out there and put the lid on about 5 minutes before the heavy rains started which might have nearly wrecked it, it flooded my whole area with big puddles everywhere so there was quite alot of water.

Lucky the pot is on high ground and is still safe.
I checked it about 10 hours later and it looks better then it did before it got soaked.
Its got me wondering about how much water is ideal for a outdoor patch? should it just be damp in the middle at all times?
I've never really let it get soaking wet when I can help it.

any advice is appreciated.

More pics in the next few days.

I've heard mentioning that too much watering or too thick a jet of water can disturb the mycelium and prevent fruiting in the case of Azurescens.

They may be one of the more temperamental woodlovers but often it is the case that similar rules apply.

As the fruiting bodies of the mycelial mass are around 90% water when conditions for fruiting are right there must be plenty of water in place.

The woodlover guides have you starting to water the patch daily at this point if localised rainfall is low.

From what I've seen new mycelium from say sterile projects can look damaged should a drip of condensated water drop from the lid but seasoned wild mycelium has tougher rhyzomorphic strands which don't appear to be affected so much. This could be species specific however as those observations are from different varieties of woodlover.

Misting is always championed and watering less so, but I'm sure there can be occasions when a good watering helps say if substrate has become a bit too dry.

well after a long while caring for this patch as my own child, my labors have paid off.
I checked it this morning and found a few healthy looking pins hidden under some bark, I couldn't believe Id missed them until then.

Theres only a few of them but enough to get me excited :winning1:

Looks like they may have popped up last night, so I will be taking some photos as long as they make it. The season for mushrooms has all but ended here and the warmer weather is coming back, so I don't have high expectations for this pot to fruit much at all.

Still, to see fruits in the same season is awesome! :feelsgoodman:

Congrats on your pins  :amanita2::amanita2::amanita2:
Picking them in the wild is good but there's something special about having a home patch of outdoor subs.

Are you planning on misting them if its dry weather?

Look forward to seeing your pics

BTW...  Why pine???  Would not deciduous debris be the preference?

@Olive
well the story behind the pins is actually pretty funny and kind of annoying.
There was 3 in total, I watched them get about an inch tall over about 2 days and I went to check the pot one morning and found several birds flinging my colonized pine chips all over the ground! literally they tore into the entire patch, including the main chunk of mycelium the pins came from.

They left a few mangled stems and thats it, I like to think that they ate them and flung bits of wood around in some sort of primitive psychedelic bird ritual that the pins helped them realize. lol

I used what was left to spawn some more pine/euch wood chips and its actually going pretty good considering the damage the birds did. The warm weather is back now so this thread will probably be pretty quiet until the start of next years season.

@Horizon
I used pine because I found the stems/myc/colonized pinecones I used to start the patch all on eucalyptus and pine.
I found they LOVE really dried out eucalyptus, the kind thats gone completely grey from being in the sun for years. The 50:50 mix of pine+euch is by far outdoing the pine by itself.

I would expect so...  There are pinetree lovers...  I believe chantrelles are one of them...  It's a "passive" relationship of sorts...

Pine cones are great! They are a lot closer to "hardwood" than the tree itself...  Dried pine cones are commonly used as an additive to a bulk substrate
