Would you rely on bear spray?
    #14967659 - 08/23/11 07:35 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I know I've made a few threads relating to this but here is one more.  Would you rely on bear spray if you were hiking in an area where there could posibly be a cougar and most definetely coyotes or coydogs (half wolf, half coyotes) nearby.  In other words if you ran into one of these animals knowing that running for a few minutes you can find safe ground do you think the bear spray would be effective?

(I do plan on getting a gun soon but I'm curious what your thoughts are on bear spray). My biggest worry would be a pack of coyotes, I'm not sure how much help a spray would be then.

Rely on a Gun and a Knife Only for Cougars.  A pistol will do, and a big knife is a must.  If you ever see a cougar, its because its he is letting you see him and its already too late, pull out your weapon and prepare for battle

In all the years I spent working outdoors, I never had a problem with coyotes, wolves, or mountain lions.

Bears I had a problem with, but only as that they were continually after the food in the coolers. A moose once got tangled in a tent (again atracted by food) and made a mess of camp trying to get out once. And Racoons are a straight up pain in the ass, but not really dangerous.

I have always packed a gun in the back country, and I have never had to use it much less draw it. The biggest hazard I see out there are weird ass people. Though I suppose it depends a lot on where you want to go I guess.

I hear there is a saying in Alaska:

"Theres a difference in black bear scat and grizzly bear scat. Black Bear scat smells sweet, and has berries in it. Grizzly Bear scat smells like peppers, and has bells in it."

Also, wild animals are not stalking the woods looking for people to attack/eat. Most of them will avoid you at all costs.

In about 7 years, I saw cougars 2 times, both times just a glimpse. I was sneaking around and saw it just in time for it to see me. Then it gave me a look like "Oh shit! What the hell are you doing here?" and then took off.

News flash:  If you can see the cougar, he'll be able to catch you before you can get twenty feet away.  I saw a cougar jump up the bank behind my house last year.  He did it in one leap, and the bank was higher than our roof.  He went at least ten feet up and about fifteen feet horizontal before he landed, pushed off with his back feet and did it again, and was gone.

I hike in black bear(they run away) and cougar country right from my back yard.  I haven't carried a can of bear spay in years, nor do I usually take my .45 because it gets awfully heavy going up a mountain on a long hike, along with all my water and other gear.  Be alert, be aware, and when you see a possibly dangerous animal, turn at a right angle to him and walk slowly away.  Never run.

I used to work out in the woods with kids. One of my favorite ways to break in a new kid was to ask them this question.

Whats the difference between a coyote and a cougar?

About 150 lbs!

Lol. The idea would be that they get hit by a spray and it shuts them down for a minute or two to gtfo.

Don't knock what you don't know.  Good bear spray is in a can the size of a small fire extinguisher.  It shoots a five foot diameter spray at 20 feet.  If you hit any mammal in the eyes with that powerful red pepper spray, it's going to get the hell away.  Obviously, it does no good to spray the bear's ass.  You need to get a direct spray into his eyes to work.

You know my take on this since I've recommended it many times.

I don't know how far you're hiking, but it's a hell of a lot lighter than a shotgun.

Think about the animals you're talking about too:
They all have very acute senses of smell.
That means the capsaicin will fuck them up that much more.

It's a lot more humane than a gun too, but that's a secondary consideration.

BTW, bear spray can easily kill a human being.
(Your throat will swell closed.)
Just to give an idea of how powerful it is.

Also, a good shot of bear spray to the face should shut them down for longer than a minute or two...
It'll shut down a person for an hour or more, and our senses are not nearly as sensitive as those animals'.

Since it is a little hard on the eyes to read form the picture of the sign, here is the text instead of the pic.

Quote:

Due to the frequency of human-bear encounters, the B.C. Fish and Wildlife Branch is advising hikers, hunters, fishermen and any persons that use the out of doors in a recreational or work related function to take extra precautions while in the field.

We advise the outdoorsman to wear little noisy bells on clothing so as to give advanced warning to any bears that might be close by so you don’t take them by surprise.

We also advise anyone using the out-f-doors to carry “Pepper Spray” with him is case of an encounter with a bear.

Outdoorsmen should also be on the watch for fresh bear activity, and be able to tell the difference between black bear feces and grizzly bear feces.  Black bear feces is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur.  Grizzly bear shit has bells in it and smells like pepper.

Fixed.

The more our society encroaches on their wild habitat, the more aggressive they become. I have read about attacks by packs of coyotes, in suburbia. In the wild, it is very uncommon.

i carry bear mace on my yearly canoe trip in the boundary waters.
though i've never even seen a bear up there the 20 or so 3 to 10 day trips i've been on..
but peace of mind is worth a lot..i have the large canister now..but i'll be downsizing when this ones expiration date has passed..big one is very cumbersome.

Getting attacked by a healthy coyote would be like winning the lottery and getting hit by lightning in the same day. If it isn't rabid, chances are you will only catch a glimpse of it before it scurries off.

I have had many close encounters with black bear including being charged after accidentally separating a mother from it's cub. The charges tend to be a bluff. All you can do is stand your ground, make yourself look bigger by spreading your arms, and yell as deep and loud as your voice will go. They will stop about 15 feet away from you, and you will piss your pants. It is scary as hell the first time, and a little bit less scary every time after. You never really do know if the bear will stop.

When hiking in bear country, make noise. It will keep the animals moving and alert them to you before you have a chance to sneak up and surprise them. Some people use bells attached to their gear but that isn't for me.

No experience with mountain lions, unfortunately, so I can't comment on that.

I think if a Mountain Lion were to attack you, you're going to have to try to fight it off, but good luck.

I've been stalked by Mountain Lions while hiking in New Mexico. They never actually bothered us, they were just curious. They have a really eerie sounding call though.

Ironically enough, I had a dream last night about fighting a polar bear with a knife. As you can imagine, the bear pretty much hugged me and bit down on my head, but I opened up it's throat while it did that

The odds of being attacked by a mountain lion/cougar is 1 in 300 million.  If you are attacked by one, then it was ment to be and I'm sorry for you.  http://www.cougarfund.org/

Regardless, I feel more comfortable carrying a gun than relying on spray from a can.  I understand that the sprays now are very good and powerful to attacking beats, but imo a .45 bullet from a weapon that produces a loud sound as well is better off for protection.

Whichever you chose, just make sure you practice and understand what you have fully before you take it out into the field.

I carry bear spray with me everywhere I go, but not for bears.  Here we carry bear guns (big caliber hand gun).

The can will empty quickly.

The bear spray is for the tweakers.

I've been in a house full of drunk people playing with some bear spray and it cleared the entire house out and sent one to the hospital.

People are missing the point about bear spray. Like said before, most animals have extremely sensitive nose and to spray them will make them turn and run. The biggest factor for the reason I carry bear spray is accuracy. Think about it. I hardly have to aim a 5 foot wide, 20 foot long spray. A 45 caliber pistol, or even a shot gun you have to aim. And you better get he shot right. A 45 caliber pistol doesn't have a huge effect on a bear. Yes it can kill it, but your going to really piss it off first. And how many rounds are you really going to get off accurately when your being charged? Not many.

The last time I went elk hunting I was carrying a 300 win mag, which is plenty to kIl any animal in the forest, I came face to face(well like 10 yards) to a rather large bear, and I'll tell you that when I pulled out my bear spray and gave a quick burst, the bear got wind of it in the air and was gone running for its life. So I know the spray works so I'll always carry it. Plus it's less weight!
