The odds of being attacked by a mountain lion/cougar is 1 in 300 million.  If you are attacked by one, then it was ment to be and I'm sorry for you.  http://www.cougarfund.org/

Regardless, I feel more comfortable carrying a gun than relying on spray from a can.  I understand that the sprays now are very good and powerful to attacking beats, but imo a .45 bullet from a weapon that produces a loud sound as well is better off for protection.

Whichever you chose, just make sure you practice and understand what you have fully before you take it out into the field.

I carry bear spray with me everywhere I go, but not for bears.  Here we carry bear guns (big caliber hand gun).

The can will empty quickly.

The bear spray is for the tweakers.

I've been in a house full of drunk people playing with some bear spray and it cleared the entire house out and sent one to the hospital.

People are missing the point about bear spray. Like said before, most animals have extremely sensitive nose and to spray them will make them turn and run. The biggest factor for the reason I carry bear spray is accuracy. Think about it. I hardly have to aim a 5 foot wide, 20 foot long spray. A 45 caliber pistol, or even a shot gun you have to aim. And you better get he shot right. A 45 caliber pistol doesn't have a huge effect on a bear. Yes it can kill it, but your going to really piss it off first. And how many rounds are you really going to get off accurately when your being charged? Not many.

The last time I went elk hunting I was carrying a 300 win mag, which is plenty to kIl any animal in the forest, I came face to face(well like 10 yards) to a rather large bear, and I'll tell you that when I pulled out my bear spray and gave a quick burst, the bear got wind of it in the air and was gone running for its life. So I know the spray works so I'll always carry it. Plus it's less weight!
