blue green algae MUST DIE!!!
    #1496764 - 04/26/03 10:34 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

so, let me get this straight.. an algae appeared and introduced oxygen into the atmosphere which killed almost every living thing on the planet, correct?

So what's wrong with humans killing every living thing on the planet other than, say, food crops and whatever microorganisms might be needed to sustain them?

Right and wrong depends on perception

I don't believe it's right to kill anything, whether it has a conscience or not, UNLESS it is for food, because I consider that natural and a necessary thing in order to sustain the physical body

but that's only me ...

there wasn't a whole lot alive back then. no animals on land... yeah oxygen was poison to many organisms, but it doesn't mean we should now kill everthing on earth that doesn't sustain us. where do you come up with this stuff?

whats the difference between an organism and an animal?

one has evolved longer? yes?

so....its okay if algae came along and killed these "incedental" organisms.

but because humans are killing older organisms...its bad?

are you sure? maybe we are a species genetically programmed to change earth's atmosphere from one with oxygen to one with carbon dioxide, so that it will be inhabitible for an alien race that wants to migrate.

humans have a choice, we could choose to ignore our programming

you cant "choose" to ignore your programming. if a robot is programmed to walk in circles, it can only walk in circles.

yes, but if a robot is programed to be able to ignore its programing if it so choses, then it ignores its programing if it so choses.

I think the difference is quite startling.

If you look at the way any non-human organism interacts with its environment and alters its environment, you see that any changes that it makes are only those necessary to its own survival. Take a tree for example, it sucks up nutrients, drops leaves, uses oxygen, etc, but all these things are directly necessary to the continuation of its existence.

Man on the hand is capable of all sorts of actions that are not directly necessary to the continuation of our existence. The fact that we can conduct such actions, means that we should have a duty to ensure that we take into account the full consequences of our actions, and detrimental results on our surrounding environment.

Just 2c from me,

WIth Metta,
Jono.

okay, but i think, we have diverged. my original argument was that, if you take away humanities flaws....which are rooted in its ability to choose, our lives would become mundane and pointless.

humans have a choice

I'm not so sure about that... I know of no culture who has made this "choice" you speak of to not destroy the environment and bring about mass extinctions. Knowing the tendencies on this board people will start defending stone age hunter gatherers, but a little research will show that they're opportunists as well. They kill and kill and kill until the animals are gone. If they had guns they'd do it quicker. The only thing that keeps them in check is that they don't have the access to technology, so the opportunists that they are have less opportunity, but their hearts are moving in the direction of ecocide.
