Are flying ants a common occurency with mushroom growing? I'm not sure if they are termites or flying ants. But I have never seen them before until now, when there are some imaginary shrooms sprouting. I remember once reading Moe had a problem with termites, but that was outside.

I had a problem with flying uncles once, but I realized just in time I had foolishly taken the brown acid and ol' Fester finally settled down on the sofa and started hittin' a 40 of OE800 with me
Check your local feed supply for "no pest strip." That may help.

Check the Contam FAQ. They are some kind of small flies due to unsanitary conditions. They suck!

Yes, like Zwiekback0 said, they may be fungus gnats. Check if your "flying ants" match up with the ones located in the Contamination FAQ. Here are some pictures linked directly from the Contamination FAQ. Do they look familiar? http://www.shroomery.org/faq/images/contam/gnat.jpg http://www.shroomery.org/faq/images/contam/sciarid.jpg http://www.shroomery.org/faq/images/contam/funguset.jpg

Your welcome!

If that's the case, go read the Contamination FAQ on how to deal with such things. I for one have never had problems with insects.
Good luck!

The reason I got them was I never aired out my cake container, but still produced many fruits. then one day these gnats just started to apprear. i tried killing them off but it didnt work. you can always add some bleach or etc in the perlite and it should kill it, but you should def. exchange the perlite and clean the container out. maybe even consider throwing out the cakes because they most likely have eggs on them. but the only way it could have been introduced to your grow chamber had to have been an outside cullprit. so a gnat probably laid eggs in the container when you werent looking SURPRISE~

One time I heard that someone got those gnats this way....
Used a tupperware plastic bin as a growing chamber. This said chamber was very well looked after. Everything was clean and doing great. No contams. One day noticed a gnat fly out of container. "Weird how did that get in there?" Everything continues to look great. Days later found hundreds of tiny little crawling things on casing. Damn gnat laid eggs and it hatched.
The container was examined to figure out how the gants could have possibly got in there. Turns out that there are small little holes in the base of the built in handle. The original one must have crawled in through that. The hole was taped up and never had a single gnat again.
Anyway that is the story I heard.

Whatever they are now that they have been seen in this house.... fucking with mother natures shrooms THEY WILL DIE! I took a 50/50 bleach/water spray bottle, a bottle of soapy antimicrobile soap/bleach, lysol disinfectant, and lastly a pure spray bottle of straight isopropal alcohol to finish off all hard surfaces.Scrubbed down EVERY surface in the house that I could reach with my fingers....it nearly killed me!!!!lol just in case i kept my large industrial type fan at the closed screen patio door exhausting the fumes outside...while the HEPA filter whent full speed.....No more bugs.....I WIN!!!!!
