First try failure : Advice on contams?

Hi. Five days ago, my postman's cousin innoc'd his first batch of shrooms ever. Now, what he thought was mycellium has turned green and ugly. Upon closer inspection, there is cotton-ball mold wicking into his PF-style jars.
His hypothesis is that he did not properly clean the lips of the jars. He cleaned them with a piece of paper towel, pretty well, or so he thought. Now he wonders if the fact that the towel became damp during his cleaning could some how have left some substrate or just brf on the lip.
Anyway, is there any better way to do this step? He doesn't really know what to do differently.
Thanks

More specifics details of your grow? Your hypothesis sounds like an unlikely one.

The jars were boiled for one hour, then set to cool for four. I'm too inexperienced to know what kind of specific details would help, but they were brf/verm cakes in 1/2 pint jars, incubated at about 74F (Incubator failure) The mold appeared as what I, in my neophyteness(word?), thought was mycellium. Then, it started changing funky colors and I discoverred the cotton-ball mold on the verm buffer in the tops of the cakes. The mold on top seems to coincide with the contam in the jar, so I'm pretty confident that's where it got in.
Please, what is a more likely hypothesis. I don't want to lose another crop to simple ineptitude.

Did you use a layer of dry vermiculite ontop of the substrate in the jars? Did you flame-sterilize your needle immediately prior to inoculation?

He showed me the jar when he was concerned about it.

It's also the stupidest thing you can do....but until you are used to the proscess...keep a journal...learn about cryptography as well....start on paper, transfer to the computer, PGP...and get rid of the paper....it will help you to ID any possible problems and narrow down what not to do the next time around...or at leas you monkeys uncles cousin or something....

Well, being a computer programmer, I've got no problem keeping things encrypted.
To satisfy my paranoia, I keep my paper lab-journal in ROT-13. It's very doubtful anyone but the feds would go to the trouble.
As with any illegal or questionable venture, the goal is not to be impossibly safe, but only to go one step further than would be expected.

There are lots of ways to be more sterile. Rubber latex gloves, airing the innoculation room out and then spraying anti bacterial spray before starting (stagnant air can be full of contams), wipe down all nearby surfaces with rubbing alcohol, wear a surgical breathing mask. The cleaner the better. My friend went all out when he did his. I'd sooner take extra precautions and be safe than not and lose jars... er I mean my friend would. Yeah thats it.

One of the best ways to beat contams is to get a pressure cooker. It's worth the investment and it can also be used for - get this - cooking food. It makes a mean corned beef.
Also, cool your jars in a sterile bag. It'll stop some contams from being sucked in while they cool.
