Casing too dry ?
    #1496226 - 04/26/03 06:05 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

My powerbook is doing the casing method. 1 inch verm, 2 inch substrate, 1/2 inch verm&coir mix on top.

After pinning, my powerbook waters the casing layer about 2-3 times a day.

But for some reason, towards the end, when my powerbook's about to harvest...

the casing always starts to pull away from the edges of the bread tin container that it's in?

This time, it's about 1/2 inch pulled away from all edges.

What's causing this? Is this normal?

Thanks

My friend is not sure exactly what causes it but yeah, it's normal. After each flush just pack those crevices with fresh casing material.

This is why my friend cases his substrate so that it is enclosed on every side. Otherwise, you'll see pins comming up along the side your next flush. Too late now. Just keep an eye out for those guys.

Or, if you're brave, flip it and fruit like it was a cake

BigJohnson, my powerbook is unsure of what you mean by "cases his substrate so that it is enclosed on every side" ?

When packing the edges with more casing material .... do you pack the top layer also?

Fill the gaps on the side and any divets that resulted from your harvest. My friend recommends that you do not add casing material anywhere else.

And pack was a poor choice of words on my part. Don't pack in it, sprinkle it in.

edit: added the last line
