Mexicana A Sclerotia Substrates
    #1494331 - 04/25/03 08:26 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

Hey, I've been doing some research on sclerotia.
Turns out the best sclerotia forming mushroom is mexicana "a" strain.
I've read from sources that it grows best on Rye Grass Seed, but can also be grown on millet and whole grain white rice.

Any more substrates?

And upon preparing... just soak substrate for 24 hours, strain completely, then load into AC bags w/ filter patch?

Thanks.

You're on the right track. I guess you already checked this FAQ section: http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23365

I got mexicana sclerotia also from straw/dung mixture. It was meant for fruiting but then I had problems with my incubator and left it on a shelf for a couple of months. When I opened it I found many small sclerotia, but the yield was not even close to the ones that grew on rye grass seed.

There has been a good deal of interest in grains recently, especially popcorn and cracked corn. These grains are larger than rye, and while this might not always be better (smaller grains=more overall surface area for spores), it may be easier to clean from the sclerotia when harvesting. People seem to be having really good results with these, do a search and check 'em out.

Yes, corn might be interesting. I don't remember anyone trying it.

Where is the best place to locate untreated rye grass seed? Anyone know a chain store like petco that sells this plain rye seed (for bird food) thats certified untreated with fungicides. Organic would be nice but it seems very difficult to find.
Also, what are some brand names to look for?

Another plus side to popcorn is that it is easy to find. I'm sure that you can find several sources for rye seed if you do a search, though.

I use rye grass seed (without fungicides) mixed with rice in a 3:1 ratio. I find the rye grass seed by itself to be too dry. The rice helps the substrate retain more water.

Do you presoak or precook the rye or rice? Where'd you get the untreated rye seed?

The rye grass seed and rice are both simmered in seperate pots until they look ready. I get rye grass seed from the hardware store.

I heard simmering is not necessary, and you lose nutrients.

I've never heard that before. Simmering is a very common way to hydrate grain. It works fine for me.

When I prepare rye grains for spawn, I used to simmer, but now I don't because it's an unnecessary step and causes nutrient depletion.

Have you noticed when you are done simmering all the rye juice you pour out? Those are nutrients that have been wasted.

Plus, I don't like exploded kernels, which may result in bacterial bloom. Sterilizing the grain also causes some kernels to explode, which is unpreventable.

True, but unnecessary with rye grains, not sure about Rye Grass Seed though.

Do you just put the proper amount of water and dry grain in the jar, then PC?

The trick is to only use enough water so that nearly all of it is absorbed during cooking. You got to do a lot stirring that way but it works very nicely.

OOOO: No, what you do is you soak your grains for 24 hours to "hatch" any bacterial endospores. Then you strain (very important) until not a drop of water can be seen from the rye. Then, simply load up into jars (or bags in my case) and sterilize.

When pressure is at 0, take your jars/bags out and shake them up to distribute the wetter with the drier grains.

You can read on this topic by scouring the FAQ.

Yes, I am aware of that technique. I didn't know about this simmering = nutrient loss business though.

In that case, for sclerotia growing, I suggest you use untreated rye grass seed and rice, soaked for 24 hours, mixed 3:1, then sterilized.

I will try rye grass seed, rye grass seed + whole grain organic white rice... what about only whole grain organic white rice?
Heard only rye grass seed is the best though.
And yes, boiling things will cause nutrient loss.

I just recently inoculated some Rye GRAIN jars with Mexicana A. A few patches of mycelium have appeared in the jars, but I have been told that this grain is "too big" and will not support the growth of sclerotia of this "fragile strain" is this true? are my jars impotent?

If so is it worth just using the mycelium to inoculate White Rice or Rye Grass Seed?

Any grain will work, more or less. Corn has been the worst performer in my experience but most grains do pretty well, even birdseed.

Whoa! this is an old thread.

I have some crushed corn and then some millet seed and for sure the corn is not as fast to colonize nor does it look as good as the millet (sold as wild bird seed), I hope to harvest in a month or so, if i remember i will post some pics of the different sizes of the sclerotia from the two substrates.
