Can you change the OS on those things? If not, even $99 seems steep for a device that will really be capable of few things. Aren't there very, very few apps for it?
idk, I guess $99 isn't too bad for an internet device though.

I read something about people working on putting android on the TouchPad, I think it would be pretty cool to have android 3.0 on a tablet once the applications catch up to the OS. Best buy has about a quarter million of them in excess stock, but the aren't the cheapest place to shop.

unless you can put android on this thing i dont know why anyone would buy it..
WebOS was nice but it just never built up the developer community that is really essential in introducing a new OS. its death was inevitable. shame.

I was given an ipad2 as a present, but if i didnt have one and this thing had a .cbr reader and good screen id buy it for $99 without thinking twice about it... I dont think most people would honestly miss the million gimmicky apps on the app store or marketplace or what not... Probably even the dead OS has most of the essentials.

I work in IT and all of are desktops, laptops, and servers are HP products. The supervisor of my IT department got an inside track on buying TouchPads, he got 4 of them for $99 each.
We got are shipment of TouchPads yesterday and from what I heard they are real slow and lag, plus not enough apps. Android is a must have upgrade.

Even disregarding the fact that it's loaded with a now obsolete and discontinued OS, it's still seems like a waste of money. Gimmicky apps aside, it would still be nice to be able to update the system and download apps that are actually useful to make the tab anything more than a web browser.
But even beyond all of that, as someone else may have mentioned, the HP tablet seems sub-par as far as hardware goes anyway. I don't recall the exact specs, but I seems to remember it having a shitty processor, I've heard complaints that it's buggy and slow. Hell the camera on it is something like 1 megapixel, that's not even as good as my crappy webcam...
All that being said, if I had $99 to throw down and I saw one available I would still buy it just I'm a sucker for that kind of thing

I picked one of these up a couple of days ago at sale price.
After a couple of days of playing with it I admit that I'm going to jump to Android as soon as there's a decent stable release of Honeycomb/ICS available for it but WebOS really isn't that bad. It's a simple interface. Great for grandparents! And HP have said it' not the end for WebOS (though I don't see how). Ideally I'd love to see a variant of Ubuntu and Unity on it but I think that's some time off.
I have to admit that I'd have been totally disappointed if I'd paid full price for it though, especially the screen. However once I've hacked the heck out of it I think it'll be better. I'm really only planning to use it as a utility though - Google Reader/note taking for meetings at work/e-reader for work/maybe some films so nothing particularly demanding. A good alternative when I don't need a full-on laptop - away for weekends/holidays etc.
The tablet market's in its infancy at the moment. I think this will tie me over for the next couple of years until the tablet market has matured a bit. I think the tablet market is going to be fair exciting once touch-devices mature. I'll never be able to say goodbye to a keyboard but I think eventually they'll bridge the gap between pro and consumer markets well.

Yeah iPad 2> Touchpad for sure. At least at full price. At sale price though it's pretty darn near. Not quite as good a user experience though. If I'd have paid full price for it I'd have sent it back.
Once the iPad gets a hi-def screen (and doesn't cost one beeeeeeeeeelion dollars) I'll definitely be jumping ship to it. Well, maybe. I don't like how Apple locks everything down. I'm really considering getting a Galaxy S2 or HTC Whatever instead of the next iPhone. It's a great, but unfortunately increasingly proprietary, OS.
Give it 5 years and I think Apple will be the new Microsoft, everyone annoyed at their dominance etc..

They said they won't release any new hardware and won't develop it anymore. Its dead.
They'd be willing to license it only because they blew so much cash acquiring Palm. HP does not care about this project.

I think HP wants to sell WebOS so they can attempt to recuperate their loses.
