Re: Buffers Grow Logs 2: WBS Mycobags [Re: buffer]

I took a peek at one of the brighter yellow bags inoculated on 8/22 (top right of the picture a few posts up that shows the cabinet with all the bags inoculating) & it's showing small signs of growth at the bottom of the bag. Things are looking good. The moisture definitely leveled out in the bags..and everything looks perfect now.

I don't have prior experience making up WBS..but I would say a 8-12hr soak, 25 minute simmer (not boil), then a quick 15 minute drain right before scooping into bags and impulse sealing appears to work pretty good. I was mostly worried about the moisture content. I did some research regarding how wet the WBS should be, and you see a lot of people saying it should not stick to your hand, or wet a piece of toilet paper. My wbs would have failed this test with an F-.

But for every 4 of those people there was 1 person (always experienced) saying it was a waste of time to spend so much time trying to dry your WBS just right, etc.., & even one guy posted a video of him drying his wbs. It consisted of a 30 second drain in a colander. Anyway, I am happy with the moisture content..things leveled out in the bag great. The seeds are not soggy and mushy but they are definitely providing moisture & will provide more than enough. I'll wait and see how these bags colonize, but I will probably be using this 'recipe' for future WBS.

Heres a quick sum up of how I did my WBS for these mycobags.
1. Rinse your WBS a few times until the water is running off clear...took maybe 3 or 4 rinses, a lot of these variables depend on your brand of WBS too.
2. Soak in 5gal bucket with 2 inches water covering the top of the seeds for 8-12hr, then rinse
3. Simmer for 20-30 minutes. You can pretty much see the grains reach their maximum size (totally hydrated). If they are getting soft/squishy IMO this is too hydrated and you should stop..may have used too much heat (boiled) or soaked too long. This is just my opinion..
4. Drain it, then I give it one last rinse, then I just left it to strain in my sink for 15-20 minutes.
5. From there I scooped it straight into mycobags, sealed, then put it in the prepared pressure cooker.
6. Pressure cook at 15psi for 2 hours (do not start timing the 2 hours until you reach pressure).
7. Let cool a minimum of 12 hours (more depending on the mass of the bags)
8. Inoculate & cover up injection site with tape.

I just want to say.. DONT FOLLOW MY WBS steps lol. They leave something to be desired.

I pretty much made both batches of WBS the same..but the 2nd one I got that wet slimey look after like a week & I think it started to ferment a bit. The 1st batch is colonizing..A little on the wet side on the exterior of the seeds..but it hasn't created a problem in th epast 8 days. I lost the other bags after only 6 soon as I noticed the grimeyslime.

Here is a pic of the colonizing WBS. I thought it was contam at first..looks like a cotton ball lol.

There is a 3rd bag too..it's colonizing on the BoTTOm of the bag..and these on top..weird.

Dude I am making it a personal goal to get these things to work. Sometime between now & when I die you will see some serious mycobag pin porn
