Can static electricy from my TV next to my laptop give me BSOD?
    #14958205 - 08/21/11 07:47 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

My asus laptop is really unstable.  Sometimes it works fine other times it crashes all the time.  I restored to factory default but it still has problems.  Can static mess with my computer?

Very unlikely/impossible that static from your TV near your laptop would cause an issue.......
Electrostatic discharge, if anything.. would fry a component.
But I sincerely doubt you are getting static from the TV... through the plastic housing on a laptop.. onto a component.. but I'm no electricity expert.
If anything I'd be more worried about magnets from the TV wiping out data on the HDD. Even then, it would have to be like right on top of it.

What is the BSOD you are getting? When does it occur mainly?
If you restored the OS to original it's most likely not a software issue.
I would check the RAM first, if not software based, IME.. RAM is the most common cause of BSODs
Try running memtest86+ overnight and see if that pulls up any errors
Also try running a chkdsk on your drives

The BSOD I'm getting is Driver_IRQL_not_less_or_equal.  It happens pretty often no matter what I'm doing on my laptop.

How do I do a chkdsk?  Also I think it may be because of my drivers being not updated.  Can you recommend a good free driver updater?  I also heard that a driver called something like "intel media accelerator" may be causing problems and when some people deleted it their problems were fixed.  I don't want to do anything that will potentially make things worse though.  Thanks for your help.

That BSOD is usually... drivers.. or RAM.. or corrupted virtual memory page file

First.. update all of your drivers. Especially video card, network, chipset, etc.
I would not use a driver updater... look up your specs from the manufacturer and get all the latest drivers from Asus. You might also want to check for Windows updates.

If the problem still happens.. check your ram. You can try removing all RAM but 1 stick, boot, and see if it still happens. If so, take that one out and put the other one in and test again.

You can also use Memtest86+ to test the RAM. You have to burn the ISO to a disc and then boot to the disc. I would let it run overnight (~8 hours). If memtest finds errors, you probably have a bad stick of RAM that needs to be replaced.

If neither of those fix it.. you can try changing your virtual memory page file
- Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Performance Settings -> Advanced -> Change Virtual Memory
- Check No paging file, hit ok and reboot.
- Go back to the same place and change to system managed size and hit ok, reboot

You are getting better at this.   I would recommend the user do a "chkdsk /r" from the recovery console before updating their drivers.  I usually have them run it until they do not get the "fixing additional errors" message.  If the message wont go away after four runs, they probably have other issues (corrupt OS/registry, bad hard drive, etc).

This particular BSOD error is in my experience nearly always driver related.

Hey guys I've been looking to update my drivers but I'm confused as to where I should be looking.  Like how do I know which ones to update, delete, download?  Thanks

this might be a simple viral bsod.  if so a refo will solve it, just destroy his data.

Refo stands for reformat?  What's the best way to do that?

Use the 'read manual' (rm) with the 'really fast' option (-rf) starting from the index (/).  (Unix joke, never mind...)

by reformat, i mean reinstall windows.  its amazing the problems a new os solves.

u run a boot disk.  then replace the old partitions w/ one new one, and install.  then spend the rest of the night hunting drivers, applying updates, installing plug-ins and starting over with a fresh new life.
