Icecream tub in shotgun terrarium
    #14957460 - 08/21/11 04:18 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Helouu. I just want someone to say to me if there's something wrong with the idea or not. It would be much better if there's not.

I have 2 quart jars of colonized wbs jars, and I'm wondering, if it will work, if I would mix the spawn with coir in this:

.. close the lid till full colonization and then put it into sgfc into fruiting.

Perlite in sgfc will maintain a descent humidity, right? I personally don't see problems. Do you?

Why not  I use small foil pans all the time.. Your SGFC better be pretty big tho.

fill it to the brim to prevent any stale air down below the rim, you'll get fuzzy stems followed by contams if you don't fan enough. if it side pins like a mofo take the whole cake outta the tub (gently) and let em do their thing. i got a huge harvest from a container like that a few months back just from side pins being allowed to grow.

fuck yeah that'll work! i use metal baking pans too in my sgfc. i let them flush out of the container, then for the second round, i "birth" it, just like a cake.

its a great step to take trying to make the transition from SGFC to monotub; it gets you working with grains, and pasteurizing coir and all kinds of shit without taking the leap quite yet.

good thinking brother, everything will turn out in your favor. i mean, in this situation, not in life. other than mushrooms, shit rarely goes in your favor.

Anyway  instead of using the icecream tub, I will use this one per 1 quart jar of wbs.

It is 3L.

I'll start preparing the substrate now. I guess it's a good idea to make a little grow log out of this thread.

I'm wondering how should I pasteurize my coir/verm mix. Why I'm asking is that I will need to prepare very little coir if you compare it with the amount needed for a regular monotub.

So.. if I'm going to pasteurize that little amount of coir, is it still good idea to put it in a big basket? I'm thinking that without a smaller basket it won't keep the temperature high enough and I should better use a regular metallic pot or pressure cooker instead of a basket.

Basically, I COULD buy a little basket for that proccess, but if I want to try something different, can I just use the regular pot instead? I could pour a little more water in at first and then put it on a burner over medium heat.

Please comment?

Ive not seen a method of pasteurization involving a basket, can you explain? I fill thick bags with the substrate then zip tie them tightly closed and put in the water weighted down.

flake off coir with a knife, hydrate, mix with verm till desired quarts

load into jars.

foil over jars.

jars in pot.

meat thermometer in center of jar.

when water hits a decent boil turn heat completely off. and at my altitude (flat ass kansas) it usually always gets to about 160 for an hour, can turn heat back on if temp starts to drop

For my future monotub grows I'll definitely try to pasteurize with the bags, but for a present 3L tub (which I'm about to fill with coir/verm/wbs) couldn't I just put the hydrated coir/verm into the jar(s), close the lid(s) and place them into oven?

It would take a long ass time to heat the center up to sterilization temp. Also, water is 25 times more efficient with transferring heat than air is. You'll save a ton of time and energy.

My bigger pot is busy atm sitting underneath the shotgun terrarium. I had to use a little smaller pot, but I figured it's okay, as there is only 2-4cm of coir over the limit of water. That's okay, right?

Only that I'll have to manage without a thermometer. I turned the heat off when the water got boiling. And I will repeat this after 30 minutes. After about 1 hour+ it should be done.

OK?

dont get it to a full boil twice.

that will make the temperature exceed 180 for sure.

the only thing about not having a thermometer is this.

when the water reaches the boil, the inside of your sub is not at 160.

when you turn the heat off, the temperature continues to rise, (the reason food keeps cooking after you take it out of the oven) it will peak at about 170 and slowly fall,

if you dont have a thermometer you cant exactly see what time it hit 160.

and time is what you need to measure.

What happens, if it exceeds 180? ..sorry, I'm not sure if I did understand your explanation.

I did it this way unfortunately: turned the heat off, when the water got boiling, and then waited for a hour and repeated.

Well if you exceed 180 degrees you'll be in the realm of sterilization and not pastuerization.

You don't want to kill of the good bacteria because they fight off trich and other nasties.

ok I found a good post:

RogerRabbit said:
It's the beneficial bacteria that help to keep your substrate 'alive' and protect against the molds such as trich.  A sterilized substrate is almost certain to contaminate with the green prior to full colonization.  For straw and manure, I stick to the low end of the scale at 140F-150F.  It seems to work much better.  Trich spores are killed by one hour at 120F, so there is no need to go even to 180F.

Dude, I don't know for sure, I am certainly no pastuerization master. I tried pastuerizing coffee to add to my mono's and both of the contaminated.

If you can afford to I would throw them away to be on the safe side, but who knows it might work. Is it just the one tray? or are ther more?

Actually there is three. I think I will go with what I have atm. My coir is atleast pasteurized for sure. Those beneficial bacteria may aswell not be that big of a factor.

Next time I will do as k00laid said.

naw.

with coir its really not a big deal.

if its only coir/verm you can literally pour boiling water on it in a bucket, and it will be close enough to pasteurization.

manure is not so forgiving.

Ok, I'll keep this thread updated, but I think it's not going to last very long as I noticed something very strange.

When I inoculated those jars with my Grain LC, they got 4 beautiful myc strikes. Then I did shake them and eventually there was myc taking over the whole jar(s). Everything seemed very nice. Now, when I started to mix my colonized wbs with coir I noticed some green grains on upper wbs layer. Didn't see that coming.

Anyway, I've now mixed the coir/verm mix with my strange colonized wbs and in few days I'll see how it turns out. Not going to hope for something good though.

Sorry.
