when i prepared the 60/40 casing yesterday i made the casing layer pretty deep, like maybe 2 inches... i wasn't even sure how deep it was supposed to be, would the depths matter?

It matters a great deal. The FAQ recommends a casing layer depth no greater than 1/4 of the substrate depth. Many cultivators use less.

What happens when it's too deep? The guy added some coir/verm after harvesting, and may have ended up w/ 1 1/4" on 4". Thanks, dog. -Che

In my friend's experience, too deep a casing layer will delay fruiting and diminish the overall yield.
He believes that putting the extra energy into penetrating an overly thick casing layer detracts from the energy needed by the mycelia to fruit.

that's just a bit over, stamets sez 1" on 4-10 inches of substrate.

Thanks, liftedoff420. I just want to make sure that the guy has a deep enough layer as well (it's on 4") .

I'd say it should be a 1/4", going by the 1:4 casing to substrate guideline.

You'll be working w/ 4"+ substrate in no time. The guy still doesn't know what the f*ck he's doing in many regards, but he has fruits .
