ID of my 'Chaliponga'?
    #14918154 - 08/13/11 10:43 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

This was from a thread at ayahuasca.com

"
There are three candidates for the identity of the plants being called and sold as chaliponga coming out of Peru right now. All of them are considered "chaliponga" in Amazonian culture, which makes it difficult for exact id's, but there are differences in the seeds and flowers, according to a local expert who has studied the problem in situ for the past 5 years:

1. Diplopterys cabrerana
2. Diplopterys pauciflora
3. Banisteriopsis rusbyana -- long thought to be the same as D. cabrerana, but which Alberto seems to have discovered still turns out to be a separate species. There are references to this possibility dotted throughout the literature, but it has never been confirmed.

The D. cabrerana has elongated pointed leaves when mature; whereas the B. rusbyana has large fat leaves when mature, but they both start off with relatively pointy leaves when they are seedlings. In the beginning, before tendrilling, the leaves come out in "tufts" (giving the appearance or habit of a tiny palm tree), whereas cielo caapi leaves come out sequentially and vertically (like a step-ladder). The "fat type" (whatever its proper ID is, B. rusbyana or D. pauciflora!) has leaves fuzzy to the touch, with a silvery sheen from the fine hairs, whereas caapi leaves are totally smooth. It would be interesting to know if the D. cabrerana ("pointy type") has fuzzy leaves, too. Remember, all three "candidates" seem to start off with pointy elongated leaves in the beginning, so it may not be time yet to tell! The fat type can have leaves *bigger* than a grown man's hand!"

I should be able to upload some pictures in a bit, but I thought maybe someone could confirm the above, without pictures?  My 'Chali' has fuzzy leaves...The seem long and pointy, instead of fat like my Cielo Caapi...hmmm, does anyone have experience with Chaliponga being fuzzy?  Or, do I have Caapi Rusbyana/D pauciflora....hmm?

Irie,
Diplopterys means two winged seed.
The D.C. I have has the same furriness....not sure about the tufts?
The leaves were pointed, similar to Alberto's "Black Caapi", but mature growth the leaves are much wider more like cielo shaped leaf!
They dry completely different though. Very soft and silky.
I haven't grown the other two.
When there was a bit of research/discussion going on another forum, we were pretty much convinced that it was D.pauciflora....just from studying the seed. Then Al come up with his D. pauciflora which threw everyone.
I sent some leaf off to a forum buddy that has links to Cornell, for testing, but yet to hear any results!
Respect,
Z

Whatdya think?  I suspect its not D. Cabrerana, but I'm not certain, due to it's roots.  Should Chaliponga have a thick woody root, instead of really fibrous like Caapi?  I thought, maybe since they're both vines, they might be fibrous (hopefully) like this plant :P
