Used a Mycobox - pics of current crop + Qs about harvest

So here was a lazy attempt using one of those Mycobox kits.
Golden Teacher used, took a while for the colonising to take place but got there in the end eventually.
Birthed the 'cake' into cold water and left in fridge overnight as a cold shock.
Pins started appearing last week. Checked back today and here are the results!

Does appear to have worked but the appearance is slightly odd, as is the black discolouration. Am I to assume those are ruined?
Are they harvestable now? Should I wait longer?
To harvest does one cut at the base or just pull?
Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Pick those Now! the black stuff are spores. Still fine, just a little ugly. Next time pick them as the veil starts to tear from the stalk and you will get a nicer looking and slightly more potent shroom! Other than that good job!

The discoloration is spores. You waited just a bit too long to harvest. Its ok though, they're still good. It just makes a mess.

Thanks for the info!
Will go pick them ASAP. Once picked, what's the best way to store? I'm assuming drying is the way forward as it will keep them for longer?

Yep. Drying. You want them so dry that they snap cleanly if you try to bend them. Anything less than that and the will go bad on you.

Here's the first lot! Not too shabby. Is there likely to be another grow?

@Wilderness - what's the best way to dry them? The last thing I want to happen is for them to go bad.
Can they be stored in the box as above overnight? If so, lid open or closed?

mushrooms are about 90% water. I would lay them out on newspaper and put a small fan on them to blow the moisture away. They will be done in 2-3 days depending on your humidity. Don't close the lid or they will go bad for sure. Happy Tripping

Put them in a paper bag in the fridge til you can dry them. Spray the shit out of the sub with a spray bottle and you should get another flush appear in a couple days

Oh, and you should be able to sneak another flush out of that. If your substrate is solid you could dunk it for a few hours and leave it in the dark for a few days to rest. Once pins start again, put it in the light. If you don't want to dunk you could mist it 3-4 times a day

There is no point that you should put your mushies in the dark lighting at all stages of growth is beneficial

A fan will take the large majority of the moisture out. You can finish the process with a desiccant chamber. There are quite a few teks out there for that, do a search and pick your favorite one.

Brilliant, thanks for the advice. Got them sitting on a wire tray with the fan blowing over them.
I know Mycoboxes aren't particularly well regarded on here for serious mushroom growers but I admit this was fairly easy. The only thing I did different from the instructions included was that once colonised I did the overnight cold water dunk on the cake.
I'll give it another dunk tonight and see if that prompts a second flush.

Ended up drying them out using a fan for >72 hours.
Dunked the cake in cold water in the fridge overnight and then back into the tub. Checked on it last weekend and I was getting a second flush!
Away from home at the mo so will see how they are progressing on Friday.
I know everyone hates on mycoboxes, but even for a shroom n00b like me, I managed to do it without it going wrong. Can't complain for the convenience!

No need to dunk in the fridge but

Second flush was pretty decent.
Unfortunately I was away from them for a week so unable to monitor growth. As such, they've done similar to the first crop. I suspect they'd have needed picking a few days prior.
Couple of pics:

Will have this reduced the potency a lot?
I've still got 1/2 a syringe of golden teacher left, so it's likely I'll buy another mycobox and grow the rest too. For that batch I'll take them away with me to keep an eye to ensure they are picked at the right time.

It doesn't drop potency a lot, but with Multi spore inoculation you will get some strong and some weak. I suspect you were a day or two late. No biggie, best of luck on the next one!
