i was talking with a guy at work today about random jobs outside of the level entry bullshit that doesnt pay. he then started talking about the electrician trade and how big of a pay off it can actually be not even including the side jobs. he had mentioned something about a 18 month class you can take and from there just work your way up.
are there any trained electricians or know some one in the trade?

I've done electric, single and 3 phase, there's good money and you can take the 18mos of classes and work your way up, the school will certainly give you a head start but you'll be working your way up regardless unless the school is going to get you to the point of being licensed

Electrical is a great trade, there's a big demand as far as i know and it also has a very high job satisfaction.
Keep in mind that electricians traditionally work inside, and its relatively light work and comparatively high pay.
Most trades are the same though - relatively easy to get into - here in BC you either find someone to apprentice you and you do 3,4 (or rarely 5) stints in school for 4-10 weeks and then get 1000 work hours and then do the next level. OR you do a foundations level class for 6 months or so, then get a job and apprentice from there...
I'll likely be doing an entry level carpentry program in the next year which will credit me for the first 2 years of a 4 year apprenticeship.
I started out entry level in the insurance restoration industry 10 months ago at $12/hr, i'm at $16/hr now and will be at 17/18$ in another 2 months.
Not that it matters - but for me, i've learned and am learning ALOT about renovations and it is a real skill and resume builder for me. Maybe you'd want to consider reno's or restoration to get a basic understanding of the trades while you wait to get into school. Something to think about anyways.

Not a lot of work in my parts for electricians. After the housing market took a nose dive a lot of electricians where out jobs and some that owned smaller companies ended up working for other more established companies.
My wife says there is a lot of folks not working right now. Of course this is Southern Oregon but she works for a wholesale shop catering to electricians and it is pretty much the same across North Ca. and the PNW.
It's a good trade in the right market, but personally working in attics and crawl spaces when it 90-100+ degrees sounds awful to me. Commercial is where it is at.
As far as Oregon I know you go into school then get into an apprenticeship program and learn more working for someone and work your way up. Being an apprentice will mean you get the fucked grunt work.
If you are interested call around to electrician companies around your area and ask em. Just say I am thinking about becoming an electrician and how is the market or do you plan on hiring in the up coming months. I have a friend in Sacramento that just got hired on to a company. It is possible, but may be harder for an apprentice.

ya unions kinda throw a wrench into the whole program.
but even if you go private company and you are working along side union workers you get paid union wages. obviously private wages are WAY lower than union
