Whoever said $18k a year..that is definitely wrong (where did you get that from?). Don't steer away from the military JUST yet! There is more money to be made (though it isn't great). The person who estimated $18k.. I am assuming you googled military pay rates, saw a number then multiplied it by 12. Thats the only way I could see someone thinking an E1 enlisted makes such a low pay amount. That would be like working at McDonalds part time and getting high on half your loot. That number you saw was a bi-weekly number. An E1 brand spankin new is makin over $30k (and thats like 4 years ago).
You can calculate salaries a lot of ways..but none will give you less, if anything you will get more. Room and board, and free food, and special income tax is included with your salary. So take that bi weekly number and add in those benefits if you so please. Even low $30k for enlisting with no degree isn't THAT BAD TO LIVE ON considering you have free food and room and bored..you can bank all that loot unless you are dumb and buy a car like my mate did.
My point is..that there is much more to be had than the base pay
If you enlist with a college degree (4 year) you can enlist as an E-4, or O-1 (officer).
Officer pays more than E4, and WAY more than E1 by far. 2011 bi weekly salary: E1 after 4 mo makes $1467 bi weekly (includes free food room and board and income tax for soldiers) E4 $1915 bi weekly
I joined as an O-1 (not an O-1E) & base pay bi weekly was $2600 or 2700 something now it's even slightly higher. Navycs.com lists an O-1 not enlisted 4 years as $2783 bi weekly but number is a TAD high (50ish bucks).
If you become an officer after being enlisted 4 y ears..base pay is higher.
My paycheck gets banked..direct deposit, I never see it, and try my best not to spend it
To anyone thinking of joining the military..there are some great benefits (school, work experience, etc..)
