Interesting Liquid Culture... NEVER seen before!

So I posted back awhile ago about some LCs that I made, and got interesting results...
There seemed to be a 'white island' floating on top of my LC... and a lot of the responses to it said that it was contamed, would turn green within a couple days, and that I should toss them... well... I kept them anyways.
Its now been a couple months... and the results seem to have... well... Take a look
(Link to what they looked like in the beginning)
I actually tested the LC out a couple days ago on some BRF Cakes... We shall see how they do, but here are a two of the jars that I took some LC out of for the cakes
Here is one of the jars that I actually opened as a 'test' to see if fresh air did anything, and to get a clearer picture. Took a decent 'whiff' of it and it smelled like PURE Mycelium:

Here are two syringes that I made a while back... around when I posted about this the first time (see link above). I kept them in a tyvek envelope in a Rubbermaid bin for storage... Pulled them out the pother day and noticed this:

Notice the 'growth' wherever the LC meets with the air... It's not contamed, I don't believe, since it smells like Mycelium... but at the same time... I have never seen a liquid culture start to 'form' when it met air. One of the syringes had a big air bubble in it (oops) but even the other airtight syringe... it still found a TINY bit of air by the needle to 'grow'.
Anyone ever encounter this? Interested in hearing some logic from everyone on what is happening... why it's happening... or if maybe I stumbled upon something new when it comes to Liquid Culture o.O I dunno... I'm hoping for some kind of 'super strain' <- yeah right.
Feedback always welcome... really interested to hear from the community and hopefully some of the pros out there

It happens. If you have enough gas exchange in the jar, I have had the myc produce small fruits and spoorulate on the island in LC jars.

It kinda sounds like they colonized over a yeast colony. Very neat tho =)
And from what I hear... "Use 1 g of elme per 600ml of water" (elme is extra light malt extract)

yea man you cant beat damien5050s "elementary lc tek"
Off the top of my head I think it is 1/4 cup dex, 1 teaspoon malt and 2 quarts of water, enough for 4 quart jars of LC.

Since the last batch was 1tbsp-(E)LME/1tbsp-Dextrose I think I'm going to go with just the (E)LME this time lol... I don't need anymore islands!
but thanks for the advice everyone... It's that quick info I was lookin for and now it's time to make me some NEW LCs

Hmm, the previous recipe called for using 1tbsp of each per jar if I recall correctly... Just weighed out a tbsp of LME and it comes out to over 10 grams! That's a huge difference... and maybe why my LC is soo 'growy'?

I'll take your word. Just measured out 2400ml of water, and I'm about to measure out 4g of (E)LME...
Bring the water to a boil, add the malt, boil/stir for a couple minutes, then filter out the sediment, load up 4 quart jars, PC @ 15 PSI for 15 mins, let cool, inoculate? Sound about right?

Kombucha is a live culture drink
Try making some; it is a very healthy life-force restorative beverage.

Love this thread
I have a bunch of LME/DEX LCS that have been sitting for a couple months after I switched to GLC and promptly forgot about them.
Totally reminded me of Kombucha too! It's like they are forming a little SCOBY on top. I would really like to see if some of them will form little lily pads with little fruits on top. Might make me buy a macro lens for the gf haha.

i use TL's LC tek everytime, and some get islands, and some don't, and it has nothing to do with contams. for example

its not very big, but thems some islands. i just stir them up with the stirrer; sometimes they break up, sometimes they dont. old, new, filtered, unfiltered...its a fucking draw of the hat.
i HAVE had the EXACT same thing happen in a homebrew MS jar, with fruits and everything, just chillin on top of the myc island. pictures soon, even if i have to resurrect this thread.
