linux question, ntfs windows xp doesn't want to be booted in the grub
    #14951991 - 08/20/11 10:40 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

now before you guys go deep into a tale about how I should use google, I've been using google extensively. I can't find the answer I'm looking for, fdisk seems to want to format a partition more then anything else, although fdisk -l seems to give good results for information.

here i my issue, when I try and dual boot, windows xp with ntfs isn't found. when I try and load it, I get this error: device format "/dev/sda, msdos1" invalid: must be (f|h)dn, with o <= n c 128

so in ubuntu it was recommended I try this from an online article:

sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /disk1

but this is the result I get:

Mount is denied because the NTFS volume is already exclusively opened. The volume may be already mounted, or another software may use it which could be identified for example by the help of the 'fuser' command.

also, just to be clear, /dev/sdb1 is the ntfs windows partition, not /dev/sda

now in windows, setting this partition as active is as simple as using these tools:

diskpart
list disk
select disk
list partition
select partition
active

why is this so complex in linux?? would it not be as simple? the weird thing is, windows was installed first, and then when I installed linux under dual boot, at first linux stopped showing up, when I marked this partition as active, it worked, but now I can only load into ubuntu, and not windows. so it's the opposite now

would anyone like the results of fdisk -l? THANKS

It wouldn't hurt.

You're MBR is located on the first part of your first disk (/dev/sda).

What I like to do, is to create a boot partition as the first primary partition on the first disk.

Something like:

Code:
Device Boot Id System
/dev/sda1 * 83 Linux (bootloader partition)
/dev/sda2 82 Swap
/dev/sda3 83 Linux (root/filesystem partition)

Then you'd need to tell the grub config (/boot/grub/grub.conf) to boot from it, so it would be like:

Code:
title Ubanto
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/<kernel name> root=/dev/sda3

The you'd add a windows XP entry to grub (/dev/sdb1 is called hd1,0 in grub):
Code:
Title Windows XP
rootnoverify (hd1,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1

And that should boot XP.

Edit:
Disregard my pervious babble and just post your fdisk -l output and your grub.conf

ok give me a second and let me find that. that's a ton. using linux is like programming a computer. it is a beautiful operating system, but can be a real hassle.

ok I'll edit this post in a second and post fdisk -l and grub.conf, thank god there is someone here who has used linux a time or two. much appreciated.

Thanks for that:

Okay, whenever pasting output into a post do in inside the [code][/code] tags. It makes it easier for me to distinguish between what you're writing to me and what's output

I'm going to need to few more details before I can help:

1. What version of unbuntu are you using
Find this out by typing lsb_release -a , paste the output

2. Find out what version of GRUB your using. It appears that modern versions of ubuntu are using that hellishly complex grub2 nonsense. Type cat /boot/grub/grub.cfg and paste me the output.

3. We can see clearly from the output you pasted that /dev/sda2 is your Ubuntu partition and that dev /dev/sdb1 is your windows partition. But what data is on /dev/sda1?

ok I don't want the tags to confuse you and give you the impression there is a bracket in the command. I'm sure you know the difference, but either way, how about I just put several space between the command and output, it should make it easier, thanks a lot btw. Ok here we go

I hope the spaces make it easier to read and jump from the command to the output, instead of more difficult. so /dev/sda2 is my ubuntu, and /dev/sdb1 is my windows, but what is my /dev/sda1? I don't know at all. How do I find out?? is this the problem? is the mbr or main grub loader supposed to be in /dev/sda1? or is that only reserved for another drive? if it's only reserved for another drive, then it's probably my external passport. I do, need a backup, since I use windows  I mean can't have windows without a backup, as we can all see

one thing that I do like about the difference between windows and linux, is linux has less gui information, but the commands give you extremely detailed output. Which is nice, whereas if you boot to windows command recovery, every out put is just pretty simple. I know some windows commands are pretty in depth, like the ones you get from using active directory commands. Well some commands, gpupdate doesn't tell you much. I believe you still need to capture instance, and things like such. Anyway I don't want to run off in left field or anything. Did that help you out at all? thanks quite a bit for the help, finding someone who knows linux commands is rare, but don't ask me why. it's an operating system with the same provided user functionality as windows, almost to the t, but completely free. free office, free server, operating system. you name it, and no viruses and no permanently fragmented hard drive. Ok let me know if you have any more ideas, thanks

    #14959476 - 08/22/11 02:27 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Many apologies for the delay my friend.

Alrighty, let's do this.

Step 1:
Let's find out what /dev/sda1 is.

We'll do this by mounting that partition and seeing what files it contains.

To do this type:

Code:
sudo su
mkdir /mnt/devsda1mntpnt
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/devsda1mntpnt

If it spits you an error about something being mounted already type this:

Code:
mount

And paste me the result.

Otherwise type:
Code:
cd /mnt/devsda1mntpnt
ls

And paste me the result.

Step 2:

Let's try automatically reconfiguring grub2.

Type:
Code:
sudo su
grub-install /dev/sda
update-grub
reboot

Now see how you go, can you boot into Windows or Ubuntu now? give it a shot and see what happens.

Step 3:

Grub2 is nasty complex piece of software that I'm for the moment unfamiliar with. Unfortunately ubuntu packages this silly bootloader with it by default (change for the sake of change I guess ).

Let's remove that nasty grub2 and replace is with a more reliable, more helpful legacy grub.

Type:
Code:
sudo su
apt-get purge grub2 grub-pc

It'll ask you if you want to remove and bla bla, hit yes.

Now that grub2 is gone, let's install grub.

Type:
Code:
apt-get install grub
mkdir /boot/grub
update-grub
grub-install /dev/sda
update-grub

It'll ask you if you want '/boot/grub/menu.lst' generated you. TYPE Y (default is N so you MUST type Y MUST MUST).

Did anything go wrong? if you got any errors at all during this part paste them too me.

Okay now reboot (type reboot to reboot).

Can you boot into windows? does it work now? If not, go to the next part.

Step 4:

Assuming you've gotten this far and you can still boot into Ubuntu but not windows than that's excellent. What you need you to do is type:

Code:
cat /boot/grub/menu.lst

And paste me the output. We will take it from here.

Do Step 1 and then Step 2. If at any point you fix it between step 2 and 4 then congratulations, otherwise we should be able to work out what's up after you complete up to step 4.

lol now the option no longer exists to choose a boot partition at grub. not to be confused with being able to choose a boot device, that very well is possible if I hold f12 or f2. but linux now just boots up with no option for windows ntfs. hey, thanks for the great advice, let me try steps 3 and 4. you did you best, and I did my best to follow the instructions, so it's all good we tried very hard, thanks for racking your brain. I'll try steps 3 and 4 now and let you know how that works out.

here is why:

cat: /boot/grub/menu.1st: No such file or directory

anyway let me try rebooting at any time. if I put the windows recovery disk into the computer and run fixmbr that will basically do the opposite? rewrite the grub for just windows and then linux will disappear? I already tried bootcfg /parameter
/scan
/list
/rebuild
/fast detect
and /default all using the bootcfg command. didn't help. Ok let me try restarting the computer just one more time, I did update the grub doubt that will have changed anything but it's always possible. Thanks a ton man, stay in touch!

ok same problem. it just boots linux, no option for windows. Ok we'll try again tomorrow. Thanks a ton

btw, I don't mean to put 1800 posts in this thread, I'm just hoping you can differ between the commands and the output I posted. I can relist some of this if you want, if the way I replied is a bit choppy and hard to read. Here is something simpler:

[ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported.  For
the  first  word,  TAB  lists  possible  command
completions.  Anywhere else TAB lists the possible
        completions of a device/filename. ]

grub> find /boot/grub/stage1
(hd0,1)

did we already go through all that? I'm not sure what version of grub that is, but previously you wanted a command that listed /boot/grub/stage1, and it didn't work. this command did, if I'm not mistaken, is that what you were looking for?? Let me know if you need me to retry any steps you've listed so far. Thanks again:awejeez:

also, would any of this help?:

http://www.debianadmin.com/mount-your-widows-partitions-and-make-it-readwritable-in-ubuntu.html

UPDATE: ok I recovered windows xp in the grub. actually it won't boot, but by putting the windows disk into the cd drive, and running fixmbr, windows xp came back in grub, it just won't boot. so whatever we did with these linux commands, at the least we removed it from grub, and then restored it to grub. to most people that would be complete failure, but I think we are getting somewhere. we have diagnosed a symptom, that is a good start. so maybe we can work with this

Try to keep all information in this thread. It makes it easier for me to read if I don't have to flick back and forth between PMs.

Okay. This is an interesting problem.

What was /dev/sdb1 then? some kind of backup drive or something?

Also, boot into Ubuntu and type:

cat /boot/grub/menu.lst
NOT cat /boot/grub/menu.1st

and tell me the result.

sorry, I guess I typed it wrong the first time. yes, /dev/sdb1 MUST have been the backup drive. I disconnected it so it wouldn't read out in the list. Does this help at all? man, linux sure doesn't play around with these commands do they. whew* what a read out.

It's mostly just comments to help you configure grub.

I stripped the comments using this command (in case you're interested):

Code:
grep -vE ^# menu.lst > menu2.lst

This left me with:

Which is really quite simple. It's just records for each item in the bootloader.

Those duplicate entries are simply there because of older kernel versions.

Looking at this file, there is NO windows XP entry specified, are you SURE that windows XP is showing up in grub the moment?

at boot it shows up, I just can't log into it. wow that sucks. Why do the core grub files in dual boot systems always have to screw each other up? like they don't like being shared. and people act like linux is perfect
apparently it needs to be in the form (f|h)dn instead of "/dev/sda,msdos1"

we did something earlier, one of those commands you had me try removed windows entry from grub. then I ran fixmbr from recovery console and the windows entry returned, I just can't boot it from grub. let me know if you have any ideas, THANKS

Curious, curious indeed. Okay, don't play with any windows commands yet, we don't want to mess things up.

Start ubuntu and type the following commands in this order: (don't worry if you don't have grub2, we'll attempt to purge it anyway, just in case).

Code:
sudo su
apt-get purge grub2 grub-pc
apt-get purge grub
rm -r /boot/grub
apt-get install grub
mkdir /boot/grub
update-grub
grub-install /dev/sda
update-grub
rm /boot/grub/menu.lst
wget http://bytecube.net/temp/shroomery/menu.lst /boot/grub
cat /boot/grub/menu.lst

Tell me if you get any errors before you reboot.

everything worked up until the last command:

btw what's up with: wget http://bytecube.net/temp/shroomery/menu.lst /boot/grub

this file is installed on the shroomery web site?? lol, let me reboot

It's just a menu.lst file I made for you.

Quote:

imachavel said:

Okay, so I'm guessing your computer didn't boot?

That's my bad, I didn't proof read what I told you to type :/

I told you to type:

Code:
wget http://bytecube.net/temp/shroomery/menu.lst /boot/grub

When in fact I should have told you to type:

Code:
wget http://bytecube.net/temp/shroomery/menu.lst -O /boot/grub/menu.lst

If you can't boot into your Ubuntu now, don't fear. This is easily fixed.

Put an Ubuntu live CD in to your computer and boot off that.

Once you've arrived on the liveCD type:

Code:
sudo su
mkdir /mnt/myfs
mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/myfs
wget http://bytecube.net/temp/shroomery/menu.lst -O /mnt/myfs/boot/grub/menu.lst
reboot

Your computer should now boot.

If you already repaired it yourself OR are able to still get into ubuntu then just do this again:

Code:
sudo su
apt-get purge grub2 grub-pc
apt-get purge grub
rm -r /boot/grub
apt-get install grub
mkdir /boot/grub
update-grub
grub-install /dev/sda
update-grub
rm /boot/grub/menu.lst
wget http://bytecube.net/temp/shroomery/menu.lst -O /boot/grub/menu.lst
cat /boot/grub/menu.lst

(don't worry, all the commands work now).

If cat /boot/grub/menu.lst fails to produce output (i.e. says: "cat: /boot/grub/menu.lst: No such file or directory") then don't reboot.

Otherwise reboot.

yeah, linux wouldn't boot at all. it brought me to grub automatically. so I need to put my live cd in and boot with that. and I use those commands when I'm inside ubuntu or just to get to start up, I boot from terminal or what? Sorry I'm just a bit confused

I might have to come back to this tomorrow. I'm using a different computer now to type this

ok I'm booted into the live cd. I'm going to try all the commands you listed 3 times in a row, then I'll reboot. if I can't get in to any partition, then I'll be using a different pc and will just use windows 7 for the night.

the good news: I booted to gparted before I booted to this live cd. gparted listed 2 healthy partitions, one ext3, one ntfs, so it's all still in here. Thank god. ok, since you seem to know your stuff maybe when this is all over I can ask you some questions regarding logging in to d link with the d link i.p. and forwarding some ports, specifically, ones that allow me to use the program synergy to run two pc's with one keyboard and mouse. I'll pm you about it later when this thread is over. Let me get back to the hard core stuff I'll run those commands twice then reboot and see what happens, if anything I'll let you know tomorrow, let me know when you log back on.
