Might somebody ID these, approx 15-20mm diameter, found growing alongside a wooded trail in southeastern PA?  Thanks.

Yes. Which is called vascellum curtisii now, if I'm not mistaken. Well, if mushroomexpert.com is not mistaken, really

Incidentally, was it moved because it's not white in the centre?

To be honest, I don't have a clue  When I read your lycoperdon ID, I thought 'spot on!', and I quickly googled the species to find out that according to ME, it's in the vascellum genus. Btw, all puffballs become brown/black inside as they mature, and if I'm not mistaken, this species here starts out just as white as l. perlatum, doesn't it?

Lycoperdon species like rich, woody piles of mulch - you'll come across them sooner or later, no worries

Thanks for the words of encouragement, koraks. I'm gonna do some more hunting this weekend so hopefully I can find some cool fungus and take photographs as good as my camera will allow.

Oy, a philosopher.  Death is the absence of life.
