hello all!
I'm about to subscribe to a firing range and I'm looking for my first handgun, while researching I saw that a lot of brand have 1911 model but I don't get what is their common denominator??
they all have that "sliding" trigger and a wooden grip but aesthetic can't be it. it must be something in the mecanism but I didn't find the answer anywhere.
so, what makes an 1911 a 1911???

the 1911 was designed by john browning in 1908 or so, in 1911 it was adopted by the US army and produced by colt, over the last 80 or so years hundreds of companies have copied it, many good, reliable copies and some really shitty ones... the appeal of the 1911 is as varied as the manufacturers but the biggies that really bring people to it are the ease of maintenance, simplicity of design, availability of affordable parts and ability to customize it for hundreds of different purposes... and reliability

like with any gun/copy they'd share the same style of receiver which is what makes all those parts interchangable

It's where a cycled round is received and seated for firing. I think there are a great number of newer firearms better suited for a complete novice. Is this just a target shooting gun or do you feel you'd ever use it in a life or death situation?

just target shooting. I don't consider any 1911 for my first buy, they just got me intrigued a lot.
might go with a glock 17 or a beretta 92

in it's absolute basic terminology the assembled frame would be a lower receiver and the slide and barrel assembly would be an upper receiver
that chick drones on about a bunch of crap, when she started talking about the 1911 purists did she mention that the commander models arent true 1911s because they arent the government length, long slide models are too long, compare the 1911 with the browning high power and you'll see a lot of similarities...
