heat resistant seals
    #1493046 - 04/25/03 02:07 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

My foaf was wondering if there is somthing out there that could be used to seal off a hole in the lid of a jar that could withstand the heat of a PC but could be injected through. He also needs it to be pretty much water resistant/tight and self healing. He was thinking somthing along the lines of apoxy or calking type stuff. He said he wants to use it for liquid culture jars. He has used hot glue to seal off the holes in the past, but he has to do this after the jars are steralized because the hot glue would melt in the PC. He has heard that filters like polyfill can get waterloged and introduce contams so he's reluctant to go that way. SO to make a long story short, do you know of any type of calking or apoxy that can withstand the heat of a PC but is soft enough to stick a needle through and heal after the needle is removed?

If your gonna go that way I would use caulk but with calking comes mildew. try the shroomery sponcers some of em have self healing injection lids for jars at pretty reasonable price.

Yeah those self healing injection lids are kinda what I'm trying to make. I was just hoping I could rig somthing up without having to mail order anything. So you think the calk wouldn't melt? Thanks for the input.

I think that silicon sealant would work, but it takes for frikin' ever to set up. Once its set up, it should hold up to the temps of a PC.

You could get rid of the metal lids and make lids from HDPE plastic. Take an old milk jug or bleach bottle and cut circles from the sides and use the plastic in place of the metal lids. Cover the jars with aluminum foil, keep the jar rings loose when you PC the jars, and tighten the rings after the jars have cooled. You can remove the foil and inject through the plastic. The holes should be too small to be a problem but you could seal them with hot glue or airplane cement to be sure. Make sure the plastic you use comes from a container that says HDPE on the bottom.

Thanks for the link, he might try somthing like that in combination with the plastic idea woodrow had. I read this link right after I posted this one and I think the plugs SixTango used might help my friend out a bunch. Thanks for the input guys.
