Are our analyses biased? I bet so.
    #14922238 - 08/14/11 06:51 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

"There is recent evidence that perceptual processes are
influenced by culture. Westerners tend to engage in
context-independent and analytic perceptual processes
by focusing on a salient object independently of its
context, whereas Asians tend to engage in contextdependent
and holistic perceptual processes by attending
to the relationship between the object and the
context in which the object is located. Recent research
has explored mechanisms underlying such cultural
differences, which indicate that participating in different
social practices leads to both chronic as well as temporary
shifts in perception. These findings establish a
dynamic relationship between the cultural context and
perceptual processes. We suggest that perception can
no longer be regarded as consisting of processes that
are universal across all people at all times."

Do you think this is related to their language of symbolism, instead of an alphabet styled text? I bet so.

i think it might have to do with strong sense of family and group mentality in the east and a strong sense of individualism in the west.. maybe

also eastern wisdom traiditions are big into interdependence and unity whereas western scientific models usually employ analyses of discrete parts.. maybe?

Certainly something to that

"In one illustrative study [7], both rural Chinese and
American children were presented with pictures that
consisted of three objects (e.g. a man, a woman and a baby)
and were asked to pick two objects out of three that went
together. Whereas Chinese children tended to group two
objects on the basis of the relational-contextual information
(e.g. a woman and a baby are grouped together
‘because the mother takes care of the baby’), American
children tended to group objects based on shared analytic
features or shared categories (e.g. a man and a woman are
grouped together ‘because they are adults’)."

The modus operandi of nature is to cyclically diversify and reintegrate.

Yeah I think there is something to that. Especially on an individual level it's easy to see a large variety of perspectives. But to have such a dichotomous split on such a large scale is strange don't you think?

I mean I'm picturing a tree from which perspectives branch out. Except that it isn't one single tree that branches out, it's two trees that branch out. There's a lot of individual perspectives about the context. And there's a bunch of individual perspectives about the objects. And science is one very effective perspective for describing objects. What is an effective perspective for describing context?

Perhaps seeing that science is embedded in the context of a culture that has an objective perspective?

Philosophy?

Not sure what you mean by context though. I'm sticking to philosophy, if my perspective is correct.
