BRF/VERM Cakes only fruiting at bottom of cake???
    #1491065 - 04/24/03 08:35 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

Is there any reason why a cake would only fruit at the very bottom of a cake? And in little clusters no less?

My Leopard Gecko's got 4 containers fruiting in plastic containers, with the sides duct-taped, and a light above. Now one cake is in it's 2nd flush, and the other 3 in their first.

Now on one of them, two aborts have occured at the top of the cake, but on all the cakes that currently have fruits are concentrated in areas, and the rest of the cake has nothing.

The one on the second flush has like 5 in one bunch, and 4 in the other, but again, nothing anywhere else on the cake.

Now half these jars are sitting directly on perlite, and the others on a plastic jar cap... So he's got a feeling the problem is not waterlogging...

He's not really worried, just a little disapointed that most of the fruiting cakes he's seen online have fruited throughout the cake, rather than "spotting" areas....

Temperature and humidity are exactly as should be.....

That is because there is more humidity on the bottom where the perlite is... maybe your fruiting chamber needs to be sealed.. or more perlite.. anyway... there's not enough humidity throughout your terrarium... hope this helps... have fun.

Well, he's got air-sealed rubbermaid jars, and the water is all but dripping down the sides.... Hygrometer reads at 97%... digital...

My friend has had this experience with cakes. All the shrooms grew at the bottom and on one side. They were okay. Have no worries.

some people have used a TEK called the invitro double ended casing found at this web page It involves putting a thin layer of verm in the jar BEFORE you add your substrate so that when you birth, your cakes will have verm at the top of them. It helps to allow fruiting on the tops of cakes.

My friend has always noticed growth near the bottom of the cakes (in clusters also).  This may be due to the fact that the once dry "vermiculite barrier" has become moist and in a way almost becomes a tiny casing layer.  Even if your cakes are not directly on the perlite  the verm still has the tendency to wick up that moisture.  The mushrooms love it.

Don't despair.  Yields will be the same as with everything else

Airflow.

Ahhhhhh, airflow may be the problem.... He fans 3 times a day, but for maybe a minute each container... He's kinda busy, and with 5 containers, chews up a lot of time, especially in the morning.....

Btw, damn you for posting that picture... heheh

A friend had similar experiences and it was because of slow colonization of the substrate. My friend ended up having overlay on the top and because the bottom was the last to colonize it was the only part without overlay(hence the only part to produce). My friend has also found that air flow will increase the over all yeild, but had no evidence that it would produce more from the top of the cake. He ended up scraping the top of the cake and with eight days had pins showing.
