Actually, its the exact opposite!
Gelatin (jello) will be digested into a soup by the organism after a while. Agar doesn't break down, so it stays solid.
The O.G. microbiologist Thomas (?) Van Leewenhoek used to complain about how crappy ol gelatin was until his associate's wife Annie Hessie suggested he try using agar. She had been using it to add to jams for toast (yumm).
Another great thing about agar in comparison to gelatin is that it has different melting and solidification temperatures. Agar is solid until 100C then melts. Its stays liquid, however until the temp drops to 44C. This characteristic of agar makes it ideal for "pour-plates" for obligate anaerobic bacteria.
EDIT: Unclear about solidification.

what did your last question ask? Agar is used in a solid form. It will be solid at room temp. If you want a liquid media you just exclude the agar. An example is Luria Agar. You can use the Luria broth mix and not add the agar and you will have a liquid media that you can grow stuf in.

No, you can't substitute gelatin for agar for the reasons no-tone stated. Jell-O is essentially a mix of gelatin and Kool-Aid and neither one has the properties of agar. btw Robert Koch was the first to use agar at his wife's suggestion. Von Leewenhoek came much earlier and was the one with the tiny microscopes and the "little animacules".

I thought there was something fishy about that when I was writing it. Thanks for the correction!
It was Fannie Hessie who suggested it though!
EDIT: Realized it was Fannie hessie, not Annie!

Don't bother fucking with JELLO. If you really want to experiment try using KNOX UNFLAVORED gelitan. That MIGHT work....but yoou can't go wrong with AGAR much easier to work with.

i was trying to use this shit called fruit pectin(sp?), but it never solidified. i am dirt poor right now(i ran out of my money, i guess spending cash all the time with no source of income is bad , plus my parents cut me off), so i am looking for alternatives to agar any suggestions of something i could use

Have you tried it? It does indeed work except that the mycelium breaks it down faster, you just have to do more transfers. You can succesfully isolate strains without a PC using gelatin. HOWEVER,agar completly blows gelatin out of the water IMO,so get the agar. And if you are gonna do the agar,no sense in half assing it and going with some premixed MEA or making DFA,use PDYA,I like the recipe Road sent me:
9 grams of agar agar. 5 grams of instant potatos "Potato Buds" brand. 1 gram of nutri yeast. 7 grams of honey. 500 ml of water.
pc for 20 to 30 minutes at 15 psi.

I wonder about using fucking Hummus sometimes lol. if it even stays in the fridge a few extra days it gets mold on it. So if one were to sterilize it with a PC, who knows?
