"Freestone Texas" Grow Log
Written By: LiftedMinds
Spawning Tek: PF Tek
Casing Tek: ZipLoc Twist and Locks will fruit from Container/ Jars (??? as of now)
Supplies:
(1) Freestone Texas Spore Print
Substrate/Spawning (1) 2 lb Bag of Organic Brown Rice Flour (1) Bag of Vermiculite (1) Case of 12 Kerr Regular Mouth Canning Jars (1) 2 ZipLoc Twist and Lock Tall storage containers
Sterilization (1) Bleach (1) Rubbing Alcohol (1) Hand Sanitizer (1) Large Plastic Bag (for air box) (1) Extra Large Pot (1) Medium Pot
***The overall goal of this Grow is to experiment with the ZipLoc Twist and Lock containers and see if they can become their own colonizing container as well as casing and fruiting chamber.
8/3/11- Sterilized lab area of work with bleach and rubbing alcohol. Sterilized Pots and Jars and let them dry. Mixed 6 cups of vermiculite with 2 cups of BRF, mixed them together thoroughly. Next 2 cups of water was added and that was mixed in thoroughly. First the 2 ZipLoc Twist and Lock containers were filled halfway and quickly closed and locked. Each Jar was filled up with Substrate and the lid was tightened. Began boiling the water for sterilization in the Extra Large pot and the Medium pot. Once water began boiling the jars and ZipLocs were tightened and put into the pots (so water was halfway on each jar.) The lids were placed on the pots and the water boiled for 90 minutes to sterilize substrate. Once the 90 minutes were up the pots were left to cool down with the lids on. Once the pots were cooled the jars were taken out so the lids could be tightened. ZipLocs and Jars were then left overnight to cool.
8/4/11- DAY 01 Sterilized lab area of work with bleach and rubbing alcohol. Sterilized Large plastic bag by wiping down the inside with alcohol and bleach. Hands were sterilized with Hand sanitizer. ZipLocs and Jars were loaded into bag with spores ready to be introduced into substrate. Wrapped syringe tip in a alcohol soaked piece of gauze inside bag (This is where the syringe would be in-between inoculations as well.) Quickly opened each lid and 1 cc of spores were inoculated into each ZipLoc and jar (4 corners, 1 center) and lid was fastened tightly quickly. This was repeated until all ZipLocs and jars were inoculated. ZipLocs and Jars were placed into rack and stored in a Dark place at a steady 74-80 degrees.
8/9/11- DAY 05 TO BE UPDATED...

I don't mean to be a dick but I don't think it was such a good idea to open the jar lids to inoculate and without using rubber gloves or flame sterilizing the needle. I hope everything turns out good for you though.

I posted this Grow Log for tips and criticism so no worries. . I've done 2 other runs that are colonizing right now the same way with 0% contamination. I open the Jars in the sterilized bag and its very fast. I was worried about that too. I live in an extreme desert climate where natural mushroom growth would be near impossible. I know theres germs and contaminates in the air, but maybe the fact its a desert climate theres less chance for contams? We'll see.... Any exp with Freestone Texas.

!!!UPDATE!!!
8/9/11- DAY 05 Checked the jars to find that 100% have started growth. All the growth is in the spots inoculated. Including the 2 plastic ZipLoc Lock and Seal. On the ZipLocs it was noticed on those theres alot of growth on the suface of the substrate. Freestone Texas is definetely an aggressive colonizer. Fast too. Very stringy Mycelium.

Rhizomorphic is the term for "stringy" mycelium but feel free to call it what you wish.
Can't wait to see pictures of your grow. Assuming you will post pictures at some point.

Even after opening the jar tops (During inoculation) there seems to be no contamination. I was worried about that. No more sweating that. So far so good. My sanitation of my lab area paid off I guess.

!!!UPDATE!!!
Pictures!
First are the 2 ZipLoc Lock and Seals.
Next are some of my 12 jars, they all pretty much look like these 4.
The last is the pic of the surface of the ZipLoc Lock and Seal. Is it okay its growing like that on the surface?

Sorry for the slow response. (beware of bumping before 24 hours)
They look great. You should be ok.
Avoid tilting the jars to get a better look, until the top is fully colonized anyway.
Good luck,

When they are too dry they will colonize faster but i would just stick to the 2:1:1 ratio. You should be fine though.

Alright it seems like my plastic containers are growing well but the glass jars I'm worried they are drying out. It's getting loose on the sides. I live in a HOT climate too. But incubation remains at 72-78 degrees. Any ideas?
