Incubation chamber, steril?
    #1490797 - 04/24/03 07:01 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

My friend wants to know: Should an incubation and fruiting chamber be very steril? His soon to be incubation chamber is a shelf above my computer(stays warm), and It's a little dusty in there, he was going to clean the whole cabinit, and use rubbing alcohol to sterilize it, is that a good idea? Should this also be done with my friends fruiting chamber, it's a rubbermaid, bought from a store.

I perfer the term "very clean" as opposed to sterile, as a Dr. friend once explained to me. Yes you should bleach out your incubator, and terr. before use. This is not "sterile", but clean practices....

Do I have to use bleach, or can I use rubbing alcohol. I have no problem using a little bleachy water in my fruiting chamber, but my incubator, like I said is a shelf. And this shelf is made of stained wood. I don't think rubbing it with bleach is the best idea, maybe if I put the jars/cases in a plastic box washed out with bleach, think thats a good idea?

I have heard that bleach works wonders. I am not talking about straight bleach but a solution, w/H2O. It is important to let bleach sit for awhile to kill the contams effectively  Rather than just mist and wipe, mist drink a beer (soda) then wipe with gloves.

Yes, I know, bleach is great, unless your putting it on stained wood, in which case, it's really going to ruin it. Does alcohol wipes work any good?
