Seems like a cruel thing to have people reincarnating into situations they cant control and expecting them to right their karma. We should at least get a little memory of past lives.

I don't believe in reincarnation. Or souls, soul mates, an afterlife, any of the stuff that seems downright fanciful when stepping back to look at it all. The more history you look at, the more you can see all these ideas being invented out of thin air. There are a great many things showing more and more that we are very much our bodies, there is not some special soul 'you' embedded inside a flesh house. When brain damage radically changes someone's personality, does that mean they actually got soul damage? Seems like a stretch.
I've actually appreciated life much more once I faced that this life is our one chance. It was very comforting and lovely to believe in various spiritual things when I did, but I couldn't keep up the lie to myself. I think it's much healthier all around to look at the mind/body as a whole. It can be surprising how many cultural concepts try to keep them separate, once you take notice of it.
Mushrooms don't show you any great spiritual truths.. or else everyone would be being enlightened to the exact same concepts. They're just poking at your brain and fiddling with all the stuff you're already thinking about. It's just you, expanded. Mushrooms helped me fully embrace my atheism and the beautiful, terrifying apathy of the universe.

That we do not remember is a blessing, not a curse.

Show me where reincarnation came from in its first mention since you claim it can be traced.

I dont think so at all. If we could remember we could have a fair way to balance karma and not be subject to whatever our situation is. I am to contract bad karma because I cant remember my faults or see past my current environment?
Liberation of suffering and peace with karma come through some level of understanding it exists for one, and understanding what you have to do to right it. Got seems like somewhat of a prick for making these rules.

I made no such claim. I'm speaking more that one can see the overall development of all these spiritual ideas, bits being tweaked as we go, religion changing as the people change. As humans develop and discuss everything with greater imagination, you can see the same kind of improved invention being applied to religion through the ages, whether you're looking at some first mention or not.
What does a first mention matter anyway? If the idea was always there, does that make it any more true? It just means we haven't been able to explain otherwise yet, like we have with so many other things that we've given up having fanciful explanations for.

If it was always there yes it is more likely to be true. Not quite like the spontanious invention of man in the sky monotheism.
Think about it, if a belief has universally in all early cultures been around and untracably long does that not say anything to you about possible truth to that belief.

No, though on some level I suspect that there is some form of continuity of consciousness in the world. Every now and then I get hit with the distinct feeling that I am in two places at once, or that I'm here and also not here at the same time.
I could be having some kind of seizure for all I know, but I've experienced it so many times over the course of my whole life that it has left an impression on me.

No, it doesn't. We didn't have a clue what the sun was for the longest time, you could've easily been back there years ago and still been able to say "Well, we've believed it's a god moving the light around for us for a ridiculously long time, so it must be true." Just because some basic, very general and impossible to disprove ideas still persist today, absolutely does not say a thing about their truth. It's called a viral idea and we have many of those, even outside of religion.
There is nothing that is universal. Not everyone believes in reincarnation. Not even all early cultures adopted that particular concept. Even if they did, it's incredibly natural to think we're separate of our bodies.. we chop off an arm and continue to function. It's incredibly natural to hope that death it not the end. That doesn't make it true.

well part of reincarnation in the first place is that your soul chooses what life it is to be born into, so that it's karmic debt can be repayed.
a soul would choose a life in which circumstances would arise with the potential to learn/move beyond certain desires.
so if you do believe in reincarnation, don't feel bad for anyone, becuase in theory they have chosen their path and have much to learn from that life experience.
anyway, here is a Dr. that studies reincarnation and has many interesting information regarding it.
http://www.near-death.com/experiences/reincarnation01.html
i've posted this link here many times, if any of you decide to look into it please let me know what your reaction is, good or bad.
