Pink noise causing visual/auditory hallucinations
    #1488759 - 04/24/03 08:49 AM (20 years, 11 months ago)

After hearing about an experiment done where subjects were given nothing but pink noise (visual and audio) as sensory input. It caused them to move into some weird state of conciousness.

So I decided to try for myself.

After sitting in the dark, eyes closed, with pink noise being blasted on my headphones...I think something happens. It only takes about a minute or so before I start hearing strange sounds overtop of the pink noise. Not natural sounds. Vaguely mushroom-like CEV's also begin to develop. Lots of swirrling patterns, some even fractal in nature.

I got my room mate to test it out as well, just to make sure I'm not a psycho  :smirk:

He got even more than I did. After taking off the headphones, he asked where I had gone while he had them on. I had just been standing beside him the whole time, but he said he heard me walk away, then heard the door close, then open again before he took off the headphones. The house was completely quiet during this time and I didn't make a noise or move.

So...try it out, tell me I'm not just nuts

What are you using for your "Pink Noise" generator?

I've heard of white noise, can someone explain how it differs please?

Cool Edit 2000 has a nice little noise generator built in.

There are several different "colors" of noise.

White, pink, and brown are the three I know best.

They differ in the frequency bands present and how loud each frequency band is, I think.

OK, so I went and downloaded Cool Edit, and put the pink noise on loop. I didn't get any visuals - but there were other subliminal sounds which came and went. It is worth noting that they weren't in the same place each loop.

I noticed that too. To me that says that they are not an artifact of the noise creation process, but are in fact auditory hallucinations.

To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.'  Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence.  Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains.  Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Yes exactly. It's hard to get complete silence these days though, so the idea (from what I heard) was to drown out all sensory data with pink noise.

this could have something to do with brainwave entrainment.
it only works through headphones though.

some cdroms create sonic tones that, when listened to through stereo headphones (for best results ) or stereo speakers, will induce low frequency energy which your brain will attempt to duplicate - or 'entrain' - to. These frequencies are normal, everyday frequencies found in the EEG waveforms of humans, and have lead to many interesting and beneficial discoveries.
The 'Binaural Beat' is created by the difference in 'carrier' frequencies in the left and right channels. For example - to achieve a 4hz Theta Beat, you could combine a 400 hz tone with a 404 hz tone to produce 404 - 400 = 4 hz. The 'carrier' is always a sine wave.

One of the biggest misunderstandings about Binaural Beats is the use of the 'carrier' tones. The 'carrier' tone is the audible tone - the part you 'hear'. This tone MUST be pure - the purest tone is a sine wave. If this tone is complex - like a violin or synthesized sound - the binaural beat target frequency will be corrupted.

Let me explain: If the primary carrier (a pure sine wave of frequency f1) contains only the first harmonic which, when mixed with the secondary carrier (a pure sine wave of frequency f2) of different frequency, will produce a pure binaural beat of:

|f1 - f2| = f3 (beat frequency)

If we choose any sound other than a sine wave ( square wave, violin, synth sound, oboe, guitar ) then the carrier itself introduces alternative tone above the fundamental f1. A typical guitar has strong 2nd and 3rd harmonic content. So, a guitar note of 100 hz also has 200 hz and 300 hz harmonic content ( It's what makes a guitar sound like a guitar ). You would expect that a second guitar note of 104 hz would produce a 4 hz binaural beat when mixed with the 100 hz primary. It does produce a dominant 4 hz beat BUT it also introduces a strong 8 hz beat ( 200 - 208 ) at the 2nd harmonic and a subdued 12 hz beat (300 - 312) at the 3rd harmonic. There are also many other complex resultant beats if you consider the additions of 1st and 2nd, 1st and 3rd, and 2nd and 3rd harmonics of each carrier. You can see that the prime objective of 4 hz has been corrupted and while your target is THETA, you actually get Theta, Alpha, and Beta content which contradict each other.

|f1a - f2a| = f3a (beat frequency)
|f1b - f2b| = f3b (beat frequency)
|f1c - f2c| = f3c (beat frequency)

for an example of this, listen to the song "Dream" by Forest For The Trees through cans.

No I've used binaural beats before with pink noise as a carrier wave.

This time though it's a MONO source I'm creating. Same sound is played in each ear.

I'm interested to see what it would do while you're tripping.  :smirk:

I did this for 200 seconds with eyes closed, and although i didn't get any visuals, I did hear an odd amount of random sounds, and I was very agitated and anxious during it. I kept twitching randomly for no reason, i felt like something was around me, and I would hear things like airplanes taking off and other high pitched noises (that seemed to come from my head not the headpones), nothing too specific though...

Give it a try.

I tried it as well, and it made me really nervous for some reason. I think I heard high pitched sounds in the background?
