Crumbling PF Cakes to a Casing
    #14905831 -

So I'm going to case my BRF cakes following 5050's coir tek. My big question is, do I still have to wait the week after the jars have fully colonized if I'm just going to break them up and case them into something else?

Yes, that week is too make sure the inside of the cake is also fully colonized.

there seems to be a misunderstanding of the term casing.

Casing is a non nutritious layer we "case" on the top of substrates
to provide a micro-climate to supplement when conditions are not optimal.

the term casing in context to something you put substrate in
like a trey was incorrect 8 years ago and is still incorrect today.

Yes, you would want to consolidate after 100% colonization.

Crumble>spawn to bulk>cover and consolidate>put into fruiting conditions.

Mixing crumbled BRF cake in with a base, bulk substrate material(s) (such as coir) is no longer referred to as a "casing".  In the industry, mixing crumbled BRF cake in with a base, bulk substrate material is now referred to as "spawning to a bulk substrate".

A true "casing" of crumbled cakes would be, a thick layer of crumbled BRF cake sandwiched in between a double-end "casing" layer, such as a pasteurized mix of 50/50 peat/verm.

When spawning crumbled cakes to a bulk substrate, there's no need for a consolidation period of the cakes.  However, once full colonization of your tray culture is reached, any consolidation period you can allot for WILL be beneficial for the explosion of the first flush.

When crumbling cakes into a bulk substrate, as an extra measure to sterility, I'll crumble them cakes inside if a zip lock baggie.
