Mycellium on Stems?
    #1485865 - 04/23/03 11:22 AM (20 years, 11 months ago)

First, forgive the spelling. I couldn't spell my way out of a wet paper sack if my life depended on it...    :smirk:

Second, my friend has a question. He finally got pins, and he's super excited about them. About 250 of them on a casing done with 3 pf brf/verm cakes cased in a bit of 50/50 mix. Some of the larger babys, about 3 inches as of this morning, had fuzzy white mycellium lookin stuff growin around the base. Is this normal? Is this due to some condition in the fruiting chamber he could change?

Third, I tried the search function, and didn't find anything, so don't tell me to go search for the answer, please.

Fourth, I almost forgot.... What conditions cause pins to abhort? He hasn't seen a single abhorted pin on the caseing yet, and he knows what they look like (from photos). All the caps are light brown to a bit darker brown, and all appear to be growing. What rate of abortion is normal / average for most people. I'm sure it varys.

Thanks much,

~peace~

Quite normal, and caused by humidity being a tad high. It's nothing to worry about but you can correct it if you want by fanning a bit more.

Generally the entire fungus body could be referred to as mycelium, and the fruitbodies, caps and stems, as specialized forms of myc for reproduction, if I understood your question. But the "extra" fuzzy myc growth on stem bases results from high humidity.
