How to enable right clicking
    #14900045 - 08/10/11 07:53 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I'm almost embarrassed to ask but....

Sometime this week I went to a website that disabled my right clicking ability.  I've read that web designers will do this so that you won't steal their content.

Needless to say, I don't know what site did this but I know that I can no longer right click on my mouse.  I've tried everything from clearing my browser contents to editing my registry.

At first I didn't mind, but now it's becoming a royal pain!

Any help/ideas would be great!

Thanks,
Lana

A web page cannot disable right click for other web pages, let alone other applications or the operating system. Odds are something else is amiss; it might just be your mouse failing, or you may have a bit of spyware/virus on your machine.

I thought it was a virus too at first, then I found..

http://www.webpagemistakes.ca/disable-right-click/

http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex9/noright.htm

http://www.codeproject.com/KB/aspnet/Disabling_the_right_click.aspx

Hipster...  yeah.. the above links were found using google, the registry hacks I tried were found by google and the instructions to enable right clicking in my OS's settings were found using google.

I have used a different mouse, no change.  It's not "that big of a deal" but wow is it annoying  Any other ideas?

Lana

That is a weird problem. You can go into the mouse settings dialog, settings|control panel|mouse, click on the buttons tab and see if anything there might help. And, although not a solution, you can use the 'application' key on your keyboard as a temporary work around till you figure it out. Just tap it and it will bring up the same menu as a right click.

Websites that do this generally use JavaScript.  You can disable the block, at least in firefox, by going to tools, options, content (tab), press the advanced button across from JavaScript and selecting only what you want to allow.

However, if your right click is not working outside of the web browser, then I would be very surprised to find that a website had anything to do with the issue.  As buttons on mice can go bad, I would test with a known good mouse before wasting too much time looking for other causes.  Assuming the mouse is good, I would next "Update driver" (under hardware device manager) for the mouse.  Tell it yes, go ahead and update with the same version, if prompted.

:smirk: I'm surprised original poster didn't figure on that being one of the most basic plug and play functions in a computer, that web site would have to get into your computer, and disable some pretty heavy shit, that is read at the bios/cmos/post loading. either way you can click print screen to save a complete image of whatever you are viewing, then paste into ms paint and save if you want to keep a pic of something from a web site.

well looks like we are both wrong. but still your mouse is right clicking what is happening is the web site has closed a port allowing you to pull files off the web site. however, since all the cookies are downloaded to your computer once you log on to the web site, I'd imagine you could use any images on the web site, as long as there isn't a packet trading proxy connection between you and the web site. Have you tried going to the web site, finding what you wanted, then switching to offline mode, and then trying to right click on the web site while offline? it might work.

but aren't there web sites that you can't view unless javascript is enabled? is there a list of codes in a web page you can find online that show what codes can do what, so you can choose to deselect another code if javascript isn't what's responsible? basically, is there something else that will disable certain functions online besides javascript? it's also possible it's a web site error, java script web designers have been known to leave lines of code unauthenticated, this has been known to cause all types of errors, such as that one.

Yes, but what I pointed out was that you can disable just tiny bits of JavaScript in Firefox; specifically, the ability of JavaScript to disable/redefine the functions of the mouse buttons.

oh which feature do you disable? I think the ability to edit hyper text markup language is what is disabled with the java that you can't right click. it could be another port of course. would working in offline mode allow you to right click on the web page?

You uncheck "allow scripts to disable or replace context menus"

You're confusing some things here, imachavel. Firstly, the blocking of the right-mouse click is nothing more than just putting an event handler in place that catches the right-click event and then proceeds to do nothing with it. No port blocking or anything like that involved. Secondly, yes, since you can view the images, you can save them - they have, after all, been downloaded successfully so that your browser can display them. This has nothing to do with cookies, which are generally used to store user preferences for the use of the website, or information on the historic use of the website by this particular user. Indirectly, cookies can be used to control the representation of a web site, but they have no direct relationship with disabling the right mouse button using javascript. Thirdly, if you view a website in offline mode, any javascript code that is embedded in the website is also active (unless the offline viewing mode of the web browser is crippled). So right click will still not work if you view the page offline. If you insist in saving the images that you're not allowed to right-click on, then your best bet is to either disable javascript as Seuss suggests, or copy the images from the browser's cache directory, where they are automatically stored (temporarily) in the process of downloading and displaying the web site. Since file names are typically replaced, it's usually difficult to locate the right files, though.

I hate when they disable the right clicking jive. Most of the time I am copying and pasting something, but I can work around the disabled right click by using Ctrl C (copy) and Ctrl V (Paste).
