Why won't my usb drive format?
    #14900042 - 08/10/11 07:52 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

It says I need to format it but no matter how long I leave it it never finishes. There's no read only switch so that's not the problem. Is it possible it isn't compatible with Vista or something? I have a Kingston 256GB DataTraveler300. This is the screen I get when it asks me to format.

Try removing the NTFS partition on the drive using Disk Manager, then define a new one and format that.

I got up to that point but I don't have the option to remove the partition?

To be honest, the few times I messed with partition tables on USB drives, I used GParted under Linux to do that. You could consider downloading a Linux live CD (e.g. Ubuntu) and solve the problem that way.

With gparted it's easy to just delete the partition and create a new one to format. It should format just fine. As it's a $700 item, call Kingston for advice. Unless it's one of the ebay fakes that's floating around which will not format. Is this something that you have had for a while or did you recently buy it at a discount?
