So about 3.5 years ago I purchased a Dell Vostro. Here's the specs. It's a pretty decent gaming laptop. This laptop is currently across the country in my brothers possession so I can't really dxdiag it and get the specs so here's the details that dell emailed me when I bought it. It's a bit messy bare with me.
Quantity Item Number Description 1 222-9562 Vostro 1500, Intel Core 2 Duo T7300, 2.0GHz, 800Mhz FSB, 4M L2 Cache 1 320-5543 15.4 inch Wide Screen XGA LCD display with TrueLife for Vostro 1500 1 311-7391 3GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 DIMM 1 320-5559 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 1 341-4886 160G 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive 1 420-7050 Genuine Windows Vista Business 1 420-7291 Google Small Biz Home Page Internet Portal 1 420-6581 Image Restore,Vista,Dell OptiPlex,Precision and Latitude 1 420-7180 Dell Support 3.4 1 430-0493 Integrated 10/100 Network Cardand Modem, for Inspiron 1 410-1100 Adobe Reader 8.1 1 313-5297 8X DVD+/-RW with double-layer DVD+R write capability, w Roxio Creator 1 313-4783 Integrated High Definition Audio 2.2 1 313-5298 Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Internal Card 1 320-5547 No Built in Camera 1500 1 412-0998 Dell Exclusive MediaDirect Instant Play Software Application 1 410-0978 Norton Internet Security 2007 30 Day Trial,OEM 1 312-0545 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery, for Vostro 1500 1 410-1052 Microsoft Works 8.5 - English 1 983-3920 Warranty Support,Initial Year 1 987-6829 No Warranty, Year 2 and 3 1 987-6977 Dell Hardware Warranty Plus Return To Depot, Initial Year 1 983-4060 Type 7 Contract - Mail-In Service, 24x7 Technical Support, Initial Year 1 900-9987 Standard On-Site Installation Declined 1 987-7479 VOSTRO,Datasafe 10GB,1YR(Incl w/price) 1 420-7368 Dell DataSafe 2.0 Online, 10GBfor 1 Year Free (for ABU only) 1 960-8851 1YR AUT. I bought a new laptop about a year ago from best buy. The customer service guy said it would run starcraft 2 on high. When I brought it home it barely ran it on low. I believe like most laptops it's not for gaming even though the guy said it was. I went on vacation around the time I got the laptop so I didn't have time to bring it back for a full refund and I didn't pay for a warranty(I know i'm a tard).
So anyways do you think the laptop in my brothers possession with the specs above I could run Battlefield 3 and Skyrim on medium settings? When I tried to play Fallout 3 on it it was glitchy and slow as hell.
I'm thinking about just buying a badass computer from cyberpowerpc. I don't know how to build my own and I'm afraid I will fuck it up. Preferably I'd like to run games like Skyrim on max settings to get the full experience. I'm rambling so I'll just stop. What should I do? lol

Oh and I heard you can buy external graphics cards for laptops I don't know if that'll help out though. I'm thinking of just giving my newest laptop to my sister and buying a desktop or making one although I've never done it.

I wouldnt consider a laptop for gaming ever really. Best Buy people dont know anything about computers, and if they do they are still going to lie to you.
I havent bought a prebuilt desktop in almost 15 years so I cant help you there...
Building your own has it perks and downsides. You will have to do a lot of reading to get up to speed on compatibility of parts and what you can get for your price point. (of course, post on computer forums or here about compatibility if you are confused). Slapping the parts together is super easy, a monkey could do it. Getting all the drivers and software you want installed will likely be a chore for you though, since this is your first time.
The cost of building your own will probably be more too. But you will get much better parts, and will have a more intimate knowledge of your rig. And in the future upgrading to the latest hot specs will be much cheaper. Think of it as investing in overhead.
Also, whether you pay for or bootleg software will play a big role in your bottom line and frustration level. Bootlegging is cheaper, but can be more confusing if you are not used to it. Buying an OEM licence is costly, but you should just be able to install it instead of having to do special instructions as with bootleg.

Thanks for the advice again DieCommie . I'm seriously considering putting together a computer. If not I'll probably buy a good priced custom one on cyberpowerpc. If I make one I'll be sure to pester you with lots of questions.

I also recommend building your own from scratch, it will be a lot more rewarding in the long run and you'll have higher quality components with full warranties. Cyberpower isn't too terrible but I still recommend building your own.
That laptop you linked will definitely not be able to handle Skyrim or BF3 on medium settings. Probably wont run on low settings. Those are going to be some intensive games. BF3 will probably choke systems that eat Metro2033 and Witcher2
Build an i7 sandybridge system -> GTX560 Ti (SLI?)or better and some SSDs and you'll be in business for any future games

Yeah I'm 99.9% sure I'm gonna build my own. If I buy my parts from Newegg will all my parts have warranties? When you say "Build an i7 sandybridge system -> GTX560 Ti (SLI?)or better and some SSDs and you'll be in business for any future games" what do you mean? Sorry I'm new to this. I think SLI means dual video cards right?

I would advise against all of that. Dont bother with intel, dont bother with SLI, dont bother with SSDs. Those are all very expensive parts that you only squeeze the slightest performance from.

I disagree on all counts, 2500-2600s are cheap, price to performance ratio, a P67/Z68 build is cheaper and faster than all but the very highest end X58s for about a quarter of the price. If you think SSDs are only going to give you the slightest performance you are joking, they are ridiculous. Once you go SSD you'll find it hard to use mechanical drives again. Also SSD caching is cool. Also I don't see what's not to bother with about SLI.
He's talking about running next generation game titles, I was telling him what I thought would run them well. But don't listen to me I just work in the gaming industry. AMD is a little cheaper sure, that's more a personal preference thing. He didn't say he was working with a super limited budget and I tend to go with quality over anything else. But I digress.
ex. 2500 nothing too fancy, nice mid range excellent chip for a good price - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115073 You'll maybe save about 150 bucks on the whole build doing AMD/Radeon, but then you're stuck with AMD/Radeon.. again personal preference.
SSDs are solid state drive and they are about 10 times faster than normal drives. More expensive but the prices have gone down considerably, more than worth it.

I think that's precisely why you think all that stuff is necessary.

He's talking about running Battlefield 3 and Skyrim and such on max settings. Those games are going to require serious horsepower to run at max settings smoothly. It will probably be the next 'Crysis' to bring systems to their knees. So doesn't matter if he wants intel or AMD he's gonna need something good.
