MY PC almost BLEW the fuck UP!!

OK shit.. I just was PCing my quart jars, 7 of them with birdseed. I put the thing on full blast heat to get it up to 20 PSI, well I forgot about the PCcooker and after 1 hour of it on the stove, the little pressure nozzle blasted off, shooting steam up into the stratosphere for 5 minutes, the PSI was at 20!!! I let the PSI go back down to 10 while the steam was coming out then put the nozzle back on. It still has 30 more minutes to go. Did I royally fuck everything up here? Can you overkill, overheat your seeds?
also, because steam was flying out, do you think I lost considerable ammount of water content in my jars?
much help will be appreciated!@
thanks!

yep. the jars could well be buggered, the rapid loss of pressure probably caused them to lose a lot of their moisture. Have a look at them and see if they look overly dry or have turned to mush.
You are lucky you were nt standing to close. I did that with mine but it had one of those weights on top which shot into the air followed by a huge jet of steam. I always keep a close eye on them now.

20psi isn't that high. yes you can overcook your grains but grains are far less susceptible to carmelization and the like than say BRF. you should be able to tell if they are screwed by looking at them. i'm not sure if your water content messed up but i doubt it. after a a non-eventful PC i customarily realease all the pressure in my PC by opening the stopcock. no moisture loss problems as of yet. 7qts of grain should be fine if cooked at 20psi for 60 minutes. I'm a bit curious what type of PC you have because 20psi wouldn't phase mine and it is an AA921 and holds 7qts.

It happened to me more than once. . I had to throw everything away since I use Tyvek that melted on the grain. Even if the jars seem intact I suggest you to make new ones. I heard that mycellium does not grow well on oversterilized substrates.

i'm telling you, 20psi is fine. in fact, i have cooked my grains at 20psi for 50-60 minutes many times. the higher the PSI the less time you have to cook. that's about it. of course there is a limit but a 5psi difference doesn't come close to it.

You probably did lose a lot of water so you might want to start over. Better safe than sorry. You have to be careful to not let a pressure cooker run completely out of water.. That will seriously fuck it up.

My PC cannot reach such pressure. It has a valve that releases steam, so if I forget it on it gradually remains without water and turns into a barbecue.

Hey guys-
AN update:
I just looked at all of the jars and for the most part they seem OK. The grain is a little more brown than usual but the water content seems alright. If I shake the grain around, kernels will stick to the side of the jar by a little water blanket so I think that's a good sign. My question and my paranoia comes from the oversterilization that someone mentioned and the fact that myclium doesn't like that. Should I just trash this and do it all over or am I just paranoid muthaphucka?

hmmm, that's a tricky one. either waste a couple of dollars worth of grains, and a couple of hours worth of time.... or risk wasting several weeks wishing you had. i know what i'd do.

how long should I let it boil for or is that in the FAQ.... I know soaking for 24 hours will let contams grow then you zap them away, does boiling have the same effect?

Yeah just cook your grains in some water. Why are you using 20 PSI? 15 is all you need. The more pressure you use, the more volatile the situation is. Just keep it at 15 for 30 min. that's all you need. I work with industrial autoclaves and these guys never go over 15.

yeah I guess the extra half hour is worth the peace of mind. After thinking about it I guess an hour would be better only because pressure cookers bought at walmart may not always keep the pressure at 15 for the duration of the run whereas the autoclave is designed to keep it there the entire time. I have autoclaved all kinds of stuff for 20 min. and had no problems.
